100 Years Ago (1896)

The haying season is about over.  The crop harvested proves very satisfactory.
 
A daughter was born to Mr. and Mrs. W. S. Parks, of Eidsvold, on Thursday last.
 
The local ball nine went to Withee on Sun. last and was beaten by a score of 17 to 11.
 
School Clerk Geo. B. Parkhill has completed the census of school children and finds the whole number to be 394, 187 males and 207 females.
 
Rumor has it that the delegation from the northern half of the county intend shelving all the present holders of positions in the courthouse at the Republican County Convention to be held at Neillsville on Friday.
 
The following delegates were elected to attend the Republican County Convention in this portion of the county on Sat. last: Thorp Village - A. O. Rhea, I. N. Jones; Thorp Town - E. Lindquist; Withee - A. Johnson; Reseburg - H. Holzhausen; Worden - M. J. Riley, Hixon -W. S. Tufts, Warner – Fred Buker, Hoard – A. B. Mathias, Greenwood – John Stewart, Jas. Bryden.
 
75 Years Ago (1921)

 
Neiman’s Corner – A son was born to Mr. and Mrs. Stanley Pabedinski Fri. morning, July 15th.
 
Reseburg – A daughter was born to Mr. and Mrs. Rhinehold Daniels, July 14th.
 
A ten pound daughter was born to Mr. and Mrs. Jay Roth, of International Falls, Minn., on Wed. July 6th.
 
George W. Courter, 79, a civil war veteran, died at the home of his son, Wm. Courter, in the Town of Reseburg on July 11, 1921.
 
The busiest hive of industry in this village during the past few weeks has been, and still is, the pea canning plant of the Big Four Canning Co.  The machinery in the plant is all new and the buildings and entire equipment is modern and the latest in every respect.  The present output is about 100,000.
 
Thorp Auto Sales Co., Messrs, O. A. Solvrud and R. G. Lawrence, owners, sold their garage, auto supplies and tools last week to three parties from Red Granite, Wis., named Hollie Decker, E. Verrett and A. R. Chipman, who have already taken possession of the property.  The new owners will retain the old name, “Thorp Auto Sales Co.”
 
50 Years Ago (1946)

 
Mike Kawalkiewicz, 13 years old, son of Mr. and Mrs. Charlie Kawalkiewicz of Lublin, was killed last Fri. morning while driving a tractor on County Trunk F three quarters of a mile North of Lublin.  He would have been 14 years old on July 28.
 
Mrs. Herman (Amelia) Bohn, 70, a former resident of the Town of Reseburg, passed away at Waldo, Wis., early Tues. morning, July 23.
 
A daughter was born to Mr. and Mrs. Alfred Baldeschwiler of the Town of Worden, on Fri. July 19th at the Stanley Hospital.
 
Albert Childs, who recently resigned his position as Standard Oil Salesman here, left Mon. for Los Angeles, CA to make an extended visit with his son, Robert Childs and family.
 
Jackie McGinnis and Billy Wagner are spending the second week at the YMCA Camp Manitou on Long Lake.
 
Marriage Licenses: Clifford H. Hanson, Town of Thorp, and Lillian E. Johnson, Wallace, Ida. – Stanley Pazur, Town of Thorp and Nettie M. Jaks, Town of Thorp.
 
Peter Larson arrived home on Sat. morning, after receiving his naval discharge at Shoemaker, Calif.
 
25 Years Ago (1971)
 
18 year olds may vote in all coming elections.
 
Delbert Burss, 77, passed away at his home Tues. July 13th.
 
Anna Baldeschwiler, 89, passed away at the Neillsville Nursing Home, Sat. July 10th.
 
On Sun. July 11, the children of Mr. and Mrs. Frank LaFlex honored them with an open house celebration for their golden wedding anniversary.
 
Henry F. Fischer, 49, Farmington, N.M. died July 2nd at his home.  He was born Jan. 5, 1922 at Thorp.
 
At 1:30 p.m. on June 19, Kathleen M. Keating and Robert J. Cance were joined in marriage at Saint Bernard’s Church in Thorp.
 
Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses, Withee was the scene for the marriage of Miss Gloria Jean Wall and Dan Christopher Gibbon on St. July 3.
 
10 Years Ago (1986)

 
Holly Szymanski, daughter of Richard and Elaine Szymanski of Thorp, has been selected to compete in the 1986 Miss T.E.E.N. (Teens Encouraging Excellent Nationally) Pageant to be held in Oshkosh, July 24-27.
 
Marie Oberle, daughter of Mr. an Mrs. Eugene Oberle of Route 3, Stanley, received her Doctor of Dental Surgery degree June 13 at the University of Minnesota School of Dentistry.
 
Laurie Jo E. Voelker, daughter of Gib and Bette Voelker, Route 3, Thorp, graduated Thurs. July 10, 1986 from IBA School of Cosmetology, Eau Claire with honors.
