100 Years Ago (1896)

The County Board in session last week appropriated fifteen thousand dollars for the erection of a jail and sheriff’s residence.
 
With this issue The Courier begins its fourteenth year. We expect to make some improvements by the addition of a new outfit of type in the near future and improve things generally in a way that will prove satisfactory to our patrons.
 
75 Years Ago (1921)
 
Town Line – Wm. Jordan has purchased the Anton Vanderwyst farm on the Yellowstone track.
 
Reseburg – A daughter was born to Mr. and Mrs. R. H. Williams Tues. morning.
 
Several inches of snow fell on Sun. last, not enough, however for sleighing.
 
Miss Josephine Verkuilen, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Verkuilen, of the Town of Worden and Mr. John H. Van de Yacht, of Little Chute, were united in marriage at St. Bernard’s Church in this village on Wed. Nov. 9th.
 
Jos. F. Yaeger, buttermaker for the Thorp Dairy Co. captured first prize in this, the 7th District on a score of 95 per cent at the convention of the Wis. Buttermakers Assoc. held at Chippewa Falls, Nov. 8, 9, and 10.
 
The Dairy Belt Cheese Co. of Spencer opened a branch warehouse here last week by leasing a portion of the Thorp Produce Co’s warehouse.  The cheese manufactured by nine factories is being received now and paraffin ready for market.  Cheesemaker, Frank Broeren, recently with the Timothy Belt Factory has charge as manager of the new concern.
 
Mrs. Mary Izydorek, 83, died at her home east of the village on Sat. Nov. 12th.
 
50 Years Ago (1946)

 
The Rev. I. T. Droegemuller has accepted a call to St. Paul’s Ev Lutheran Church of Reseburg and Trinity Ev Lutheran Congregation of Thorp.
 
Jacob Rogus, 74, passed away at the Chippewa Falls Hospital on Wed. Nov. 13.  Death was caused by a cerebral hemorrhage.
 
Andrew Jasinski, 103, passed away of old age infirmities at the Becker Hotel on Thurs. Nov. 14.
 
A very pretty wedding took place at St. Hedwig’s Catholic Church on Nov. 12th, when Miss Eleanor Wnek, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Wnek became the bride of Clarence Hedler, son of Mr. and Mrs. Fred Hedler, all of Thorp.
 
Bobb’s Mill – An announcement was received of the birth of a daughter to Mr. and Mrs. Bernard Colby of Strum on Thurs.
 
Mr. and Mrs. Harry Badzinski became the parents of a baby girl, Magdalene, on Fri. Nov. 15 at the Stanley Hospital.
 
Frank Laszuk was married to Miss Loretta Novak at St. John’s Boscoe’s Church, in Chicago on Sat.
 
Lone Oak – Mr. and Mrs. Frank Pietrzak are the proud parents of twin girls, born on Thurs. Nov. 14th at the Stanley Hospital.  Their names are Caroline and Carolyn.
 
Roger Creek – A son was born to Mr. and Mrs. Harvey Thompson at the Victory Hospital on Sat.
 
25 Years Ago (1971)

 
The Public Service Commission of Wisconsin has received an application of Thorp Telephone Company for authority to upgrade to all 1-party service.
 
Joseph Kempski, 80, a resident of rural Lublin, passed away on Sun. Nov. 7th.
 
Miss Joyce Olson, a freshman at the Wis. State University-Eau Claire, has pledged the Epslion (Epsilon) Omega Chapter of the Delta Zeta Sorority.  Joyce is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. R. W. Olson, Grant St. Thorp.
 
Mr. and Mrs. Alex “Cap” Kowalczyk, owners and operator of Cap and Toots’ Bar-Café in Gilman for 18 years, have announced the sale of the business and building in the downtown area to Mr. and Mrs. Ed. Ivey, New Auburn.
 
Miss Marilyn Phyllis Losiewicz, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Felix Losiewicz, Thorp, was given in marriage by her father to Gary John Eckes, son of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Eckes, Marshfield, on Sat. Nov. 6, at St. Hedwig’s Catholic Church.
 
Breezy Hill – Mr. and Mrs. Dallas Granquist have a baby girl born on Sunday.
 
10 Years Ago (1986)
 
Gordon Wolf, 75, Rock Dam, former owner of Wolf Pharmacy in Thorp, died in the emergency room at Neillsville Memorial Hospital Sun. afternoon, Nov. 16, 1986.
 
Gilman Pirates Football Team State Champs.
 
Nancy A. Nolechek and Gerald G. Gardner exchanged marriage vows Sept. 27, 1986 at St. Bernard’s Catholic Church.
 
Julie A. Paine and Dennis A. Skalecki, both of Chippewa Falls, exchanged marriage vows on Sat. Oct. 4, 1986 at Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church, Chippewa Falls.
