100 Years Ago (1897)

As Boylan purchased a violin on Mon. and hereafter callers at his bachelor quarters will be entertained with music.
 
Married at the residence of Jacob Lucken in the Town of Worden on Dec. 27th by Geo. Burke, J.P. Mr. Edward Lucken and Miss Annie Sanbo.
 
Nick Boinske, a boy employed at the Cirkel Mfg. Cos. Factory, had his right hand caught between the rollers of a planer on Tues. and the result was a badly crushed hand.  Dr. McKittrick attended the case and deems it somewhat doubtful if the hand can be saved intact.
 
At a regular meeting of the village board on Mon. evening last a franchise was granted to Henry Leibole to erect poles, string wires, etc, on the village streets for the purpose of lighting up the buildings with electric lights.  The board voted unanimously in favor of granting the franchise, which is to run ten years, at the end of which time the village may purchase the plant and failing to do this at that time reserves the right to do so at the end of each five year prior thereafter.  Mr. Leibole will begin active operations as soon as the papers covering the franchise are executed.
 
75 Years Ago (1922)
 
August Walsdorf has a crew of men engaged in erecting an ice house on the land south of his residence.  The new structure will be 26x54 feet in size and sixteen feet high.
 
The Kraft Bros. Cheese Co. of Marshfield purchased the Dow Cheese Co.’s cheese warehouse here last week and has taken possession of the same and will continue the purchase and shipping of cheese from here in the future.
 
Montell Solvrud is employed as clerk in the Wolf Drug Store.  Miss Margaret Hansen resigned her position there on Sat. last.
 
Miss Anna Jaeger, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Jaeger, and Mr. John Kinast were united in marriage on Tues. of last week L. J. Snyder, J. P. performing the ceremony.
 
Donald Lindquist, 11, son of Mr. and Mrs. Eph. Lindquist, died at the hospital at Stanley on Mon. last.  The young man had been ill with inflammatory rheumatism for some time but could not withstand repeated attacks.
 
Mrs. Anton VanLoo died at her home southwest of the village on Mon. Morning last, aged about fifty-five years.  Her death was caused by a sudden attack of heart trouble.

Funeral service: for Mrs. James Cotter, 54, who died at the Wis. General Hospital at Madison, after undergoing a gall stone operation on Mon. Dec. 30, 1946.
 
Ruby Newslets – Mr. Kenney has sold the Ruby Store to one of the Sromek Brothers, who has taken possession of it already.
 
Born to Mr. and Mrs. Vlad Zwierzynski of Los Angeles, Calif.; a son on Dec. 27, 1946.  Mrs. Zwierzynski is the former Clara Wehlacz.
 
Mr. and Mrs. Henry Deutschlander have sold their farm located five miles north of Thorp recently to Mr. and Mrs. Tony Gordon of Chicago.
 
A son, Robert Joseph, was born to Mr. and Mrs. George Trybula on Sat. Dec. 28th.
 
Taft – A daughter was born to Mr. and Mrs. Reinie Wald, Jan. 2, in the Victory Hospital in Stanley.
 
Neiman’s Corner – Mr. and Mrs. Stanley Zuber, of Colby, had their baby girl christened on Sun. at St. Mary’s Church in Colby.  They named the baby Carol Rose.  Mrs. Zuber is remembered here as Rose Mroz.
 
Reseburg – A son was born to Mr. and Mrs. Curtis Hugill on Dec. 26th at Madison.
 
Born to Mr. and Mrs. Eddie Maier of Chicago a seven pound baby boy Ralph Edward on Dec. 28, 1946.
 
25 Years Ago (1972)
 
John Papierniak, 76, of Thorp, passed away, Dec. 16, 1971 at the University of Minn. Hospital, St. Paul, Minn.
 
John A. Robinson, 62, a Stanley resident, passed away at his home Thurs. morning of a lingering illness.
 
The Thorp Cub Scouts traveled by bus on Thurs. Dec. 30th, to tape Sheriff’s Bob Show which was shown on Sat. Jan. 1st.
 
A baby girl, Tina Marie, five pounds, twelve ounces was born to Mr. and Mrs. Tom Greguska of Denver, Colo.  Mrs. Greguska was the former LaVonne Boardman, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William Boardman of Thorp.
 
White Birch – The community welcomes their new neighbors, Mr. and Mrs. LaVerne Burish and family.  They have bought the former John Ignasiak farm and have moved in Fri.
 
Eugene R. Witek, son of Mr. and Mrs. John H. Witek, Withee, was a candidate for a Bachelor of Science degree in physical education at the U. of Wisconsin, La Crosse.
 
St. Hedwig’s Church, Thorp, was the setting Sat. afternoon, Nov. 27, 1971, for the wedding of Toni Ann Schultz and Larry Edward Luzinski.
 
Paul Bradvold, 65, died suddenly at his home Fri.
 
Miss Maureen Alice McDevitt, daughter of Mrs. Dorothy McDevitt and Daniel McDevitt, of Tacoma, Wash., became the bride of David Lee Ryniec, son of Mr. and Mrs. Leo Ryniec of Thorp, on Wed. Nov. 24th.

Christopher James, son of Brian and Donna Haas received the sacrament of baptism Sun. Jan. 4, 1987 at SS Bernard-Hedwig Church.
 
Nick Skwierczynski, 60, died suddenly at his home in Norridge, IL, Christmas morning, Dec. 25, 1986.
 
Doris Ustruck, 86, of West Milwaukee, and formerly of Thorp, died Dec. 18, 1986.
 
Katherine J. Turek, 86, passed away Fri. Jan. 2, 1987 at Christ Hospital at Oaklawn, IL.
 
Albert E. Anderson of Amboy, MN, died Dec. 29, 1986 in St. Luke’s Nursing Home, Blue Hearth MN at the age of 98 years.
 
Felix J. Evert, 92, Chippewa Falls, died Sat. Jan. 3, 1987 at St. Joseph Hospital, Chippewa Falls.
