100 Years Ago (1897)

E. R. Wiley shipped a carload of onions to market on Tuesday.
 
Election time is approaching.  The village board has changed the time for holding the annual election of officers to the first Tuesday in April.
 
Miss Alvena Hauck, 21, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ferd Hauck, died early yesterday morning after but a few hours illness.
 
Snow has fallen nearly every day during the two past weeks and the average depth in the woods at present is over two feet.  The present winter has been, so far, the finest for outdoor work we can remember, but few days of severe cold weather having been experienced.
 
We have not a particle of doubt that Hon. James O’Neill, of Neillsville, will be our next circuit judge of this district.
 
75 Years Ago (1922)
 
Reseburg – Born to Mr. and Mrs. Albert Turenne on March 1st a daughter.
 
Geo. Heagle employed on the coal docks at Superior had his right leg crushed so badly on Tues. of last week as to require amputation above the knee.
 
Death invaded the home of Mr. and Mrs. W. A. Wilhelm at 9:20 on Sat. morning last and claimed the little daughter, Isabel Anne who was born June 6, 1941 and was never in perfect health.
 
Mrs. Bertha Hilbo, 54, was born in Regenwalde, Germany on Oct. 26, 1868, and died March 5, 1922.
 
The girls Literary Club had charge of the General Exercises in high school this week.  Following is the list of things rendered: Life of Alma Gluck-Kathro Frank, Victoria Records, song sung by Alma Gluck; Life of Galli Curci-Florence Bohn; Victrola Record, song sung by Galli Curci; Life of Caruso-Pauline Bogumill, Victrola Record, song sung by Caruso; Life of Paderewski-Hester Bradshaw, Piano selection by Paderewski-Murl Schneider; Life of Wagner-Gretchen Wagener; Piano selection by Wagner-Linda Walsdorf; Life of Mendelssohn-Frances Borysiewicz; Piano selection by Mendelssohn-Agnes Roytek.
 
50 Years Ago (1947)
 
John Wolf, 69, retired business man of Thorp, passed away at his home here of a stroke Wed. March 12, 1947.
 
Louis Phillips, 77, engaged in business here for the past 35 years, passed away at his home here after a long illness Tues. evening.
 
Wm. Tobola has sold his farm to August Oberle and expects to move in the near future.
 
Word has been received that Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Halagera had a baby boy born March 11, weighing eight and one-half pounds.  Mrs. Halagera is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William Urban, of Thorp. 
 
Born: to Mr. and Mrs. Dean Hubbard a son on March 5, 1947.
 
Neiman’s Corner – Matt Rzetelny died Fri. evening of old age.
 
Thomas Gerald, a seven pound, 12 ounce son, arrived at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Peter Tomkowiak, on Sat. March 8, 1947.
 
Mr. and Mrs. Stanley Herman received word that a daughter was born to Mr. and Mrs. Melvin Ruebeck, of Chicago.  They named the baby Sheila Marie.
 
25 Years Ago (1972)
 
Florence Decker, 81, died Sat. March 4th.
 
John Biddle, 63, rural Thorp, died of an apparent heart attack Wed. March 1.
 
About nine inches of snow fell in the Thorp area last Friday and Saturday.
 
A Requiem Mass was offered Wed. Feb. 23 at St. Catherine’s Church, Burlingame, Calif. for Stanley Antosik, 81, who died Sun. morning.
 
Thorp’s All-Conference, Eastern Cloverbelt John Nied, a Thorp High School senior scored 191 points during the conference games and 310 points for all games.
 
Lavern John Blazek, 63, a former resident of Hannibal, WI, died at his home in Milwaukee, Mon. Feb. 28, 1972.
 
10 Years Ago (1987)
 
Joseph Albert Staron, 98, Stanley, died at his residence Sun. March 8, 1987.
 
Robea Agnes Rodgers, Thorp, was dead on arrival at Victory Memorial Hospital, Stanley on Thurs. March 5, 1987, of an apparent heart attack.
 
Lillian D. Brenner, 91, died at the Thorp Care Center on Sat. March 7, 1987.
