100 Years Ago (1897)

The Post office was moved on Monday last into the drug store by the new postmaster, W. R. McCutcheon.
 
At a special election held in the Town of Reseburg last week on the question of purchasing a building to be used as a town hall the proposition was defeated by a large majority.
 
Math Brunner has secured the Gerbing Saloon and opened the same to the public on Tuesday.  This property also includes the large hall, and is being repaired by the owner, Aug. Gerbing.
 
A most distressing and fatal accident occurred at the farm home of Allen A. Arnold just outside the village limits about 7:30 on Monday evening last, resulting in the sudden death of Charlie, the youngest son of Mr. and Mrs. A. A. Arnold.  It seems that Harry Arnold, brother of Charlie’s aged 14 years, was endeavoring to fit some cartridges loaded with shot to a gun which he had, the young boy stepping in front of the gun just at the moment when the cartridge in the gun went off unexpectedly, the full charge of shot entering the unfortunate boy’s left breast killing him instantly.
 
75 Years Ago (1922)
 
Pozen – A stork visited Mr. and Mrs. John Rogalski and left a daughter, June 27th.
 
A son was born to Mr. and Mrs. Jos. F. Morgan on Sat, July 1st.
 
A little son of Mrs. S. Bamburak aged about two years died last week.
 
Raymond Maslowski, 10, arrived here from Chicago on Sat. last, ill with diphtheria and died at Jos. Kotecki’s home on Mon. evening and buried on Tues.
 
Sons were recently born to Mr. and Mrs. Sylvester Krakowiecki and Ed Soderberg’s.
 
Joseph Balicki, 58, died at his home in the Town of Withee on Thurs. morning, June 29, 1922.
 
Mr. Joseph Turenne of Thorp and Miss Elsie Henchen of Globe were quietly married on Wed. afternoon, June 28, at the Globe Lutheran parsonage.
 
50 Years Ago (1947)

 
At a Nuptial High Mass celebrated by the Rev. Pitzenberger at St. Anne’s Catholic Church, Stanley, June 26, Miss Lucy Henke, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Peter Henke, Town of Worden, became the bride of Bernard Haas, son of Mr. and Mrs. George Haas, of Thorp.
 
At two o’clock today in Grace Lutheran Church, DeWitt, Wis., Miss Elverda Faye Schmidt and Robert Smith were married in a double ring ceremony.
 
A daughter was born to Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Heidemann at the Victory Hospital at Stanley recently.
 
A son was born to Mr. and Mrs. Robert Pease, of Alameda, Calif. recently.
 
An eight and one-half pound son was born to Mr. and Mrs. James Possley on July 4th at the Stanley Hospital.
 
A daughter was born to Mr. and Mrs. Cliff Heiser at the Victory Hospital at Stanley on July 3rd.
 
Twin boys were born to Mr. and Mrs. Walter Welgos, weighing six pounds and six ounces and five pounds, two ounces, on Tues. July 8, 1947, at the Victory Hospital at Stanley.
 
Lone Oak – A baby boy was born to Mr. and Mrs. Ed Paczkowski, Sun. June 29th at the Stanley Hospital.
 
25 Years Ago (1972)
 
Miss Kathleen Diane Jaworek and Robert Mesang exchanged wedding vows on Sat. June 10, 1972 at Immaculate Conception Church, Eau Claire.
 
Holy Family South Church, Stanley was the scene for the marriage of Dorothy Stangret, daughter of Mrs. Mike Krupa and Brian Krupa, son of Mike Krupa, Stanley on Sat. June 3.
 
Catherine Mary Zielanis, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Alfred Zielanis, Thorp, became the bride of Michael M. Genelin, son of Mr. and Mrs. Francis Genelin, Le Saur, Minn., in a double ring ceremony performed by Father John Puerner, on Sat. June 17, at St. Hedwig’s Catholic Church, Thorp.
 
10 Years Ago (1987)

 
City officials and citizens in Stanley are celebrating this week after an agreement was finalized for the opening of a veneer products company that will employ 164 people in the former Cardinal Corporation building.
 
Geraldine Wisniewski, 83, died suddenly on July 7, 1987 at St. Michael’s Hospital, Milwaukee.  Gerry was a resident of Lublin until 1980.
 
Rose Liazuk, her daughter Ellen and her friend Rita attended the baptism of Rose’s grandson, Michael James Liazuk.
 
Area students on UWEC Dean’s list: Dave Burke, junior, psychology; Gary Pszeniczny, senior, physical education; William Rademaker, senior, mathematics; and Janelle Wincek, junior, marketing.
