100 Years Ago (1897)

H. Leibole is building an addition to his residence, 12 x 24 feet in size.
 
Crops are looking splendid.
 
Luke McGuire Jr., fell off a turning pole on Thurs. last breaking his right shoulder.
 
A daughter was born to Mr. and Mrs. Richard Biddle of the Town of Reseburg on Sat. last.
 
A number of citizens of this village are intending to visit the gold fields of Alaska next spring.  Joe Kleckner however will start for that region today and intends to be gone about three years.
 
For the past ten days nothing has been talked of so much on the streets as the Alaska gold diggings.  Several young men are making arrangements to visit the gold diggings next spring if the excitement in regard to the new finds keeps up.
 
Lightning struck the large barn on Wm. Ogle’s farm early on Sun. morning last and destroyed the structure entirely with contents.  Mr. Ogle had barely time to get his team out.  Having just completed putting up his hay the evening before his loss is considerable, including besides the barn, twenty-three tons of hay, one lumber wagon, harness and various farming tools.  He carried no insurance.
 
William J. McGrogan went to Centralia on Sat. last where he is to be joined in the holy bonds of wedlock with Miss Lizzie McCarty on Wed.
 
75 Years Ago (1922)

 
Benjamin Finnegan, a resident here some years ago and a brother of Patrick Finnegan of this village, died at Crosby, Minn. on Tues. of last week.
 
Everard Forrest Sterling, son of Joseph R. and Ella Sterling was born Sept. 11, 1878 and died at St. Paul on July 9, 1922.
 
H. J. Brown, of Owen, was in town on Tues.  Mrs. Brown will return here to reside this fall and his son-in-law, Isaac Sisco and family will also move here.  Roy Brown and family will again take up their residence on their farm in Texas.
 
50 Years Ago (1947)

 
Butler – Word was received that Ralph Hoye passed away at the Sacred Heart Hospital in Eau Claire, Mon. morning.  He had suffered from cancer the past two years.
 
Eidsvold – A seven pound son was born to Mr. and Mrs. Willis Boardman on Sat. the 16th at the Victory Hospital at Stanley.
 
Last rites for Mrs. Josephine Kaleta, 56 years of age, of the Town of Reseburg were held Tues. morning, July 29, at St. Hedwig’s Church.
 
Lone Oak – Mr. and Mrs. Ed Paczkowski had their baby boy baptized Sun. at St. Hedwig’s Church. They named him Marvin Edward.
 
Roger Creek – Clarence Mills has sold his farm in this vicinity.
 
25 Years Ago (1972)

 
Agnes Sobol, 85, passed away at Victory Memorial Hospital, Stanley, on Sat. July 22.
 
Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence Boardman are happy to announce the birth of a grandson, Todd Philip on July 12th, to Mr. and Mrs. James Huhn of Watertown.  Mrs. Huhn is the former Karen Boardman.
 
Services were conducted by Rev. Hewittson, Tues.  July 25, 1972 at St.Katherine’s Episcopal Church, Owen, for R. James Tolford, 67, long time resident of thorp, who died July 22 at Hayward Memorial Hospital.
 
Frank S. Gronek, 47, of Glen Ellyn, Ill., died suddenly Wed. July 12th.
 
10 Years Ago (1987)

 
Thorp Chief of Police Robert Knudtson has resigned due to injuries sustained in an automobile accident which would prevent him from returning to his regular duties. 
 
Helen M. Burrington, 74, Thorp, died Wed. July 22, 1987, at Victory Memorial Nursing Home, Stanley.
 
Stanley Lisiecki, 79, Lublin, died Sat. July 25, 1987 at Victory Memorial Nursing Home.
 
Arthur E. Doege, 64, Stanley, Wis. died at his home Fri. July 24, 1987 after a lingering illness.
 
Dan and Lynn Kotecki, Brooklyn Park, MN, are happy to announce the arrival of a new Adam Robert, born July 7, 1987.
 
Melinda Ann Morrison became the bride of James Donald Smasal on Sat. June 17, 1987 at Holy Rosary Catholic Church, Owen.
