100 Years Ago (1897)

Official Guide to the Klondyke country, 300 pages, price 25¢ at E. L. Snyder’s.
 
Frank Switalski and family, who moved to Globeville, Colorado, last Jan., returned here last week to reside.
 
Haying is delayed considerably by threatening weather and frequent showers.  Many will not finish their crop until the latter part of this week.  The crop is immense.
 
Thos. Steele, Jr. manager of the big N. W. Lumber Cos Farm four miles south of the village has completed the job of putting up 300 tons of hay on that place, the crop being a fair one.  A one hundred acre field of oats on the same farm also promises an excellent yield.
 
By the way wouldn’t it be in order for some one of our business men to handle the product of the farm in this vicinity this fall?  Present indications point to a large surplus in the way of hay, oats, barley, rye, beans, peas, etc. and a ready market is something the farmer wants.
 
75 Years Ago (1922)
 
Bobb’s Mill – Mr. and Mrs. Mike Ulka are the proud grandparents of a baby girl which was born to their daughter Anna on July 25th.
 
Reseburg – Ernest Doege, the eleven year old son of Mr. and Mrs. Herman Doege was seriously injured last Thurs. by being kicked by a horse which he was assisting in driving in the barn.
 
A daughter was born to Mr. and Mrs. Geo. Pirus, of Lublin, on July 15th.
 
A daughter was born to Mr. and Mrs. Horace Mars on Mon. July 31.
 
Geo. F. Becker is building an eighty foot addition, of tile to his studio.  He has purchased two up-to-date bowling alleys and will install them in a few weeks.
 
The Big Four Canning Co’s pea cannery here is still in operation with both day and nigh shifts and the average output are about 100,000 cans of peas daily.  Several car loads have already been shipped.  The quality of peas harvested is the best ever produced in this locality and the amount per acre is surpassing all expectations.
 
50 Years Ago (1947)
 
Lots of smoke, which made its appearance about 12:00 o’clock Sun. evening during the dance at the Mileaway Ballroom, turned into fire when Leon Pawlak, manager, investigated underneath the floor on the northeast corner of the pavilion.  It had been smoldering from some time and evidently caught from a cigarette dropped through a crack.
 
John Bogue, son of Mrs. Ella Bogue, of Chicago and Miss Leocadia Koltis, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Anton Koltis, of Thorp, were united in marriage at the Annunciation Church in Chicago, July 26, 1947.
 
Irene Coates Smitke, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Coates, Thorp, became the bride of Harvey Albert Zettler, son of Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Zettler, Marshfield in a service Sat. at the Immanuel Lutheran Parsonage, Marshfield.
 
Miss Isabel E. Pickett, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Pickett, of Spencer, became the bride of Kenneth C. Holden, son of Mr. and Mrs. R. O. Holden, Minneapolis at Minnehaha Methodist Parsonage, Minneapolis, on July 19th.
 
On Fri. Aug. 1, 1947, occurred the sudden death of Percy L. Kingman, 58, of Gilman.
 
Mrs. Laura Miller, formerly of South Worden, passed away at the home of her granddaughter, Mrs. Arnold Hundleryin, Centralia, Wash. on Tues. July 22, 1947.
 
Before the gladioli banked altar of the Holy Rosary Catholic Church on July 12th, Miss Josephine Gengler, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Nick Gengler, of Medford, became the bride of Joseph Wudi, Jr., son of the Senior Wudi’s of Rib Lake.
 
25 Years Ago (1972)
 
Clarence Rhyner, 68, died suddenly at his home in the trailer court, Sat. July 29th.
 
Florence Hillbo, 83, passed away suddenly at her home, Tues. Aug. 1st.
 
Mrs. George Ogurek, 74, Thorp died Fri. at her home.
 
Wed. of this week, receipts totaling $1,325 were taken from the desk of the manager of the Farmer Store here by two men who entered the business place shortly before noon.
 
A 4 lb. 3 oz. baby boy, James Leonard, was born to Mr. and Mrs. Tom Davis, Jr., Wed, June 28, at St. Mary’s Hospital at Rochester, Minn.
 
Mrs. Earl Hedrington, 58, Chippewa Falls, died Mon. at St. Joseph’s Hospital.
 
Miss Susan Ellen Blazel became the bride of Francis J. Shepeard on July 22, 1972, at St. Sebastian’s Church, Milwaukee. 
 
Theresa Ann Krueger, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Krueger, Marathon and Bernard Grendzinski, son of Mr. and Mrs. Alex Grendzinski, Sr. of Thorp, were untied (united) in marriage Mon. the third of July.
 
Miss Susan Mae Koltis, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Walter Koltis, Thorp, has entered the July class at City College of Cosmetology, Eau Claire.
 
Word was received here by the Stanley Liazuk’s of the birth of a granddaughter.  She weighed 10 lbs. 4 oz. and has been named Heather Jane Kaczmarcik.
 
The Male Grove Church of the Brethren, Stanley was the setting chosen by Miss Kathryn Kay Curtis as she exchanged wedding vows with Timothy Paul Smith.
 
Miss Christine Ann Cwikla and Francis G. Wilczek exchanged wedding vows at St. Stanislaus Catholic Church, Lublin on July 15th.
 
10 Years Ago (1987)
 
St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, Thorp is celebrating 100 years of Lutheranism in the Thorp area with events and services this week.
 
Barbara Smiley and Robert Bishop were united in marriage on Sun. July 19 at Evangelical Free Church, Crystal Lake, IL.
 
Butler – Congratulations to Barney and Mary Ann Mertens of the birth of their newest granddaughter, Jodi Sue Mertens, born July 30th.  Her proud parents are Richard and Tamie Mertens of Appleton.
