100 Years Ago (1897)

About twenty Indians accompanied by squaws and papooses, all from Black River Falls, are camped about twelve miles north of here.  They are all hunting deer.
 
Wm. Shattuck brought the first deer to H Free’s Meat Market on Mon. morning last.  It was a fine buck and weighed 236 pounds.  The unusual large size of this deer will keep Peter LaFlex busy during the season to beat it.
 
75 Years Ago (1922)
 
Reseburg –The splendid weather we are getting is certainly a great boom for farmers in clearing land and getting their fall work done.
 
Henderson’s Corner – A town line farmer recently traded a wagon load of potatoes for a barrel of flour and gave thirty-seven cents to boot. – Several farmers in this locality are feeding their corn, cabbage and potatoes to livestock rather than sell them at prevailing prices.
 
Thos. Aucutt is employed at mike Szerlong Barber Shop in Owen.
 
An eight pound son was born to Mr. and Mrs. John Pirus of the Town of Roosevelt on Tues. Oct. 24th.
 
Norman Craig suffered the loss of three fingers while operating his well drilling machine on Mon. of last week.
 
B. J. Brown and Isaac Sisco and family moved here from Owen on Mon. and are occupying the former’s residence.
 
Active work on the sewer extension of about 600 feet was begun last week and a large crew of men is digging.  Cramer & Co., of St. Paul, contractors, are doing the job.
 
Miss Pearl Glowacki, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Paul Glowacki, and Mr. Mat Olejniczuk were united in the holy bonds of matrimony at St. Hedwig’s Church on Mon. morning, Oct. 30th.
 
Charles Hutchinson, 68, died at his bachelor home near Jump River on Mon. of last week.  Mr. Hutchinson, better known here in early days as “hutch” was for many years an employee of Jos. Sterling at the saw mill four miles east of Thorp.
 
Mrs. Adelgunda Beilfuss, wife of Albert Beilfuss, 65, died at her home at Withee on Thurs. last, after a very brief illness.
 
John Kurtinaitis, Leighton Morris and Charles Fischer gave interesting talks to the High School assembly last Fri. morning.
 
Mr. and Mrs. Mike Malinowski returned from Chicago last Wed. where they attended the wedding of their daughter, Stella to Mr. Joseph Majewski, which occurred on Sat. Oct. 21, 1922.
 
50 Years Ago (1947)
 
St. Bernard’s Catholic Church, Thorp, was the setting of an impressive informal wedding at nine o’clock, Sat. morning Oct. 25, when Rev. Arnold Muckerheide, joined in holy matrimony, Mrs. Helen Rowan, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. M. C. Boardman, of Thorp and Mr. Thomas Tobola, son of Mr. and Mrs. Jos. Tobola, of Thorp.
 
Lublin – A christening party was held for Dennis Carl Galarowicz, son of Mr. and Mrs. Leonard Galarowicz at the home of Mr. and Mrs. R. Galarowicz, Sun. Oct. 19.
 
25 Years Ago (1972)
 
Despite record rain fall and cable delivery difficulties, Michele’s Pipe Line Construction, Inc. has completed over two hundred miles of buried cable installation plus burying, about six hundred service drops of eight hundred scheduled as the major part of providing all one-party telephone service to Thorp Telephone Company subscribers.
 
Alice Marie Zawacki and William Brian Leppert of Rockford, Ill., were united in marriage on Sat. July 15, at St. Rita Catholic Church, Rockford, Ill.
 
Mary Lebiecki, 86, passed away at Victory Memorial Hospital, Stanley on Wed. Oct. 25th.

Joseph Podolak, Gilman, died at his residence Mon. evening, Nov. 2, 1987.
 
Ramie Mroz, 85, Thorp, passed away Sun., Nov. 1, 1987 at St. Joseph’s Hospital, Marshfield.
 
Jane Marie Wozniak became the bride of Thomas Michael Burzynski.  They were married Aug. 29, 1987 at Holy Family Catholic Church, Stanley.
 
Rosanne Knopik, daughter of Leona and Alvin Knopik, Little Falls, Minn., became the bride of Allen Olejniczak, son of Charlotte and Roger Olejniczak, Thorp on Sat. Sept. 19, 1987 at St. Bernard’s Church, Thorp.
 
Scott Kubera, 23, of Kansasville, Wis. was found dead on Oct. 24, 1987.  He was the son of Arlyn and Dolores Kubera of Union Grove.
 
Chester A. Hardy, 83, Beloit, died Fri. Oct. 23, 1987 at Beloit memorial Hospital.
 
Peter Kapsy, 78, Gilman, was dead on arrival at Memorial Hospital, Medford, Thurs. Oct. 29, 1987.
