100 Years Ago (1897)

Jesse Howard has purchased five acres of land lying directly south of the Catholic Church of Mrs. Leroy Graves of Fond du Lac.
 
C. H. Sheldon purchased 160 acres of land, partly cleared and part timber, located on Yellow River about eighteen miles northwest of here, last week.
 
Geo. Smith, Martin Richelen, Clyde Smith, William and Arthur Steele succeeded in killing nine deer during the season.  They were camped southeast of town. 
 
On Fri. morning last the limited train no. 3 pulled into town without its trainmen, the conductor and two brakemen having been left at Abbotsford.  Agent H. A. Culler was rung up and instructed to stop the train here and wait the arrival of the crew who arrived in a short time on an extra engine and the train proceeded.  The engine pulled out of Abbotsford on a supposed signal to him from the rear end of the train but the trainmen deny making the signal.
 
75 Years Ago (1922)

 
Henderson’s Corner – John Kocherer has purchased the Sam Drake farm, near Eidsvold, of Wm. Streich. 
 
A son was born to Mr. and Mrs. Tom Malinowski on Tues. Nov. 14th.
 
Miss Stephanie Kmiec and Mr. Harley Swim were united in marriage at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Jos. Yager, by Judge L. J. Snyder, on Wed. evening of last week.
 
50 Years Ago (1947)

 
Rev. Muckerheide officiated at St. Bernard’s Catholic Church, Thorp, on Thurs. Nov. 20, 1947 for Capp Collins of the Town of Butler, who passed away early Mon. morning, Nov. 17, 1947.
 
The body of Mrs. Frank Yager, who died at her home in Cicero, Ill., is expected to arrive at the Thorp Funeral Home on Wed. Nov. 26th.
 
Miss Shirley Schultze, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Theo. Schultze of Stanley, became the bride of William Wojcik, son of Mr. and Mrs. John Wojcik, of Thorp, in an afternoon ceremony at St. Hedwig’s Rectory, Thorp Nov. 12th.
 
Sigmund and Marion Skrzypczak have opened a new farm tractor and auto repair business at Lublin.
 
Clarence M. Glidden, 24, of Waukesha and former Polley resident was killed Fri. Nov. 21; he was injured fatally when the car he was driving was struck by a south bound Soo Line passenger train at an intersection in Waukesha.
 
Yellow River – The infant daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence Semanko who was born at the Sacred Heart Hospital on Tues. passed away.
 
The first wedding to be solemnized at St. Daniel’s Church in Chicago was that which united Miss Frances Klapatauskas, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Michael Klapatauskas of Thorp and Mr. Sammy Vallone, son of Mr. and Mrs. D. Vallone, of Chicago, Ill.
 
Funeral services were conducted by Rev. Droegemueller at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church at Reseburg Tues. afternoon, Nov. 25, for Albert Buss, 57, who was accidentally killed Nov. 22nd.
 
25 Years Ago (1972)

 
Irene Gwiazda is giving a kidney to her father, Walter Gwiazda.
 
Mrs. James B. Mahler, nee Esther L. Tiedemann, Milwaukee passed away Nov. 17, 1972.
 
A large crowd attended the farewell party in honor of Mr. and Mrs. Tom Kuester and family at the Silver Dollar on Tues. night.  They will be moving to Loyal where they purchased the Amber Inn.  The new owners of the Silver Dollar are Mr. and Mrs. Harley Svoma and daughter.
 
10 Years Ago (1987)

 
Roseanne Marie Ciolkosz and Brian Gerard Benzschawel exchanged marriage vows on Sat. Oct. 3, 1987 at St. Mary’s Czestochowa Church, Stanley.
 
Sally Ann Pawlicki, daughter of Adam and Mary Pawlicki, Lublin and Larry Victor Leopold, son of John and Vernetta Leopold, Park Falls, were united in matrimony on Sat. Sept. 19, 1987 at St. Stanislaus Catholic Church, Lublin.
 
Ann Gay, 79, Gilman, Town of Aurora, Taylor County, Died Nov. 17, 1987 at Victory Memorial Hospital, Stanley.
 
Mae H. Higgins, 103, a Vancouver resident since 1975, died of pneumonia in Vancouver Fri. Oct. 30, 1987.  She formerly lived 8 miles north of Thorp, 3 west, selling her farm in 1927.
 
Two Thorp young men have been selected for inclusion in the 1987 edition of Outstanding Young Men of America.  Mark LaGasse, editor and publisher of The Thorp Courier and Thorp Attorney Steven Andersen were among those selected.
 
Ralph Haas, son of Mr. and Mrs. Casper Haas of Thorp, is one of 58 students named members of the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire popular men’s glee club, the Singing Statesmen.  Haas was also named a member of this year’s Concert Choir.
