100 Years Ago (1897)

Mary, daughter of Joseph Colombliewski, and Kapser Skrypinski were united in marriage by Rev. Korczyk at St. Hedwig’s Polish Catholic Church on Thurs. last.
 
A bell has been purchased for St. Hedwig’s Polish Catholic Church, located two miles east of the village, and  will arrive and be placed in the belfry in time to be used for the first time on Christmas Eve.  The new bell will weigh seven hundred pounds.
 
John McGrogan planted two pounds of sugar beet seed last spring, the seed covering a trifle over an acre of ground from which he dug and stored five hundred and seventy-five bushels of beets.  John says that next year he will manufacture all the sugar he needs for his own use.
 
Nils Peter Hansen went to Withee on Thurs. last where he was united in the holy bonds of wedlock with Miss Carrie Larson who recently arrived there from Chicago. The ceremony was performed at the Danish Lutheran Church.
 
75 Years Ago (1922)

 
Butlerville – Born to Mr. and Mrs. Guy Butler, Nov. 27, 1922 a son.
 
Arthur Borek began clearing a forty in the Town of Mead which he purchased recently, last week.
 
The barn and outbuildings, hay and farm machinery on the John Silva farm in the Town of Thorp were destroyed by fire on Fri. night last.
 
50 Years Ago (1947)
 
Rochelle Bowen, 20 month old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Duane Bowen, Eau Claire, fell down the attic stairs at her home on Sat. morning and suffered a basal skull fracture.  She died Sat. afternoon at the Sacred Heart Hospital.  Mrs. Bowen will be remembered here as the former Laura Reineke.
 
Mrs. Earl Stewart, 28, Stanley was instantly killed when thrown from a car driven by her husband when he lost control of the vehicle while traveling east on Highway 29 one mile east of Curtiss Corners and crashed into a power line pole.
 
Funeral services were held on Mon. morning for Frank Kulwiec, 59, who died at the Medford Hospital, Fri.  The services were held at St. Stanislaus Catholic Church, Lublin.
 
Mrs. Frank Yager, 48, passed away at her home in Cicero, Ill. on Nov. 22, 1947, of a stroke. Frances Pierzak was born in the Town of Withee, Clark Co., on Sept. 10, 1899. 
 
The second set of twins born in this community during the past month arrived at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Strojny on Sat., Nov. 29, 1947. The twin boys were born at the Stanley Hospital and weighed 4 pounds 9 ounces and 6 ˝ pounds. They were named Richard John and Robert Joseph.
 
Breezy Hill – A son, Ricky Roy, was born to Mr. and Mrs. Edmund Alger at the hospital in Stanley on Nov. 17th – A son, Gary Joseph, was born to Mr. and Mrs. Firman Baures at the Victory Hospital Thanksgiving evening Nov. 27th.
 
Mitterhoffer – A son was born to Mr. and Mrs. Harley Swim Jr., at the Victory Hospital, Thanksgiving Day; they named the little one Gregory John.
 
Eidsvold – A girl was born to Mr. and Mrs. Emory White on Sun. evening.
 
25 years Ago (1972)

 
On Dec. 2, 1972, Troop 27, Thorp, will hold a court of honor at the American Legion Hall. At that time, we will be honored to give the Eagle Award to Jim Matzinger and Mike Amundson.
 
J. Stanley Greschner, Route 1 Withee, 46, died a week ago of injuries suffered in an accident on his farm.
 
John J. Kowalczyk, Des Plaines, Ill. and Susan P. Michur, North Chicago, Ill. were united in marriage at Holy Family  Church, North Chicago on Sat. Nov. 11, 1972.
 
Michael Wall, 86, died Thurs. Nov. 16 at the Marshfield Convalescent Home.
 
Born: to Mr. and Mrs. Robert Halida of Sheboygan a baby boy, Jeffrey Michael Nov. 25th at St. Joseph Hospital, Marshfield.  Mrs. Halida is the former Carol Hempleman.
 
10 Years Ago (1987)
 
A fire that started in the upstairs bedroom of the Ray Gutowski home in the Town of Reseburg caused extensive smoke, and some structural damage Sat Evening Nov. 28.
 
Thorp Ambulance personnel recovered the body of a 20 year old Route 2 Withee man from Sterling Creek four miles south of Thorp, Tues. morning Dec. 1.  Darrell L. Gaede, 20, apparently drowned after his car left CTH M and overturned in the creek, Clark County authorities said.
 
Joshua Kaczmarek and Jesse Sonnentag received their Bobcat Badges at the monthly meeting of the Thorp Cub Scouts, Tues. Nov. 24.
 
Corner News – On Nov. 20th Alan Roger was born to Roger and Cheryl Hakes.
 
Carol M. Plechacek, daughter of Anton and Ruth Plechacek, Thorp, has been promoted in the U.S. Air Force to the rank of Airman First Class.
 
Vincent J. Wojcik, 61, Medford, died Thurs. Nov. 26, 1987, at the Medford Hospital.
