100 Years Ago (1897)

A daughter was born to Mr. and Mrs. Fred Bratz of the Town of Worden on the 26th ult.
 
About twenty-five young friends of Miss Eva Sheldon assembled at her home on Sat. evening last and enjoyed a few hours of frolic and fun interspersed with music and everything which goes with “having a good time.”
 
The ox team, for years and years the only means used for skidding logs in the lumber woods is going out of use.  We understand the Northwestern Lumber Co. has discarded the ox team altogether and this winter is using horse teams entirely for skidding purposes.
 
As usual the village board finds it unnecessary to assess a tax for village or general purposes this year, there being sufficient funds in the village treasury to provide for all needs until saloon license money is again collected next July.  The balance in the treasurer’s hands at this time is $1,159.97, of which sum $600 has been appropriated to make the annual payment on the waterworks loan, leaving net cash balance of $559.87 to defray expenses until July 1st, 1898.

Worden – Miss Mary Carmine daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ed Carmine and Dewy Crueler were united in marriage Thurs. Nov. 30th.
 
Boob’s (Bobb’s) Mill – A son was born to Mr. and Mrs. George Pabich on Nov. 27th, -- Mr. and Mrs. Wm Gorsegner are rejoicing over the arrival of a baby boy at their home on Dec. 4.
 
A baby girl was born to Dr. and Mrs. W. F. Nolechek on Sun. Dec. 3.
 
50 Years Ago (1947)

 
The Rt. Rev. Msgr. H. P. Toeller read the nuptial service for the former Jeromea L. Weber, who is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Frank J. Weber, Wausau, and Mr. Francis J. Neis, whose parents are Dr. and Mrs. F. P. Neis of Thorp on Thanksgiving Day at St. Mary’s Catholic Church.
 
John Nowobielski, 79, a resident of this community since 1902 passed away at his home in the Town of Withee, of a stroke of paralysis on Nov. 26, 1947.
 
Thorp will pay solemn, poignant tribute to the memory of the first of her World War dead to return from foreign battlefields to a final resting place at home.  Village President, A. E. Bauer has asked that all business places in the village be closed from 9 to 10 a.m. today while the funeral procession is passing through Thorp, with the body of Pfc. Victory Kaszubowski.  Kaszubowski was killed in action in Belgium on Jan. 22, 1945.  He was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Alex Kaszubowski of the Town of Taft.
 
Mrs. Sigrid Qualle, 79, mother of Newelle Qualle of Thorp passed away at the hospital at Baldwin on Sun. afternoon last.
 
Eidsvold – born to Mr. and Mrs. Art Everson, a girl, Dec. 3.  They named her Elsie Lois.
 
Worden – A ten and one-half pound son was born to Mr. and Mrs. Robert Johnson, of Bayfield.
 
Miss Dorothy Vanderhyden, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Wilferd G. Vanderhyden, of Thorp, became the bride of Mr. Clifford R. Carlson son of Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Carlson, of Milwaukee, at St. Bernard’s Catholic Church here on Sat. morning Nov. 29.
 
25 Years Ago (1972)
 
Semen Lubicz, 65, died at Stanley Nursing Home, Stanley on Saturday, Dec. 2, 1972.
 
The promotion and transfer of William S. Babbitt to Assistant Manager of the Thorp Finance Corporation office in Menomonie has been announced by Jean C. Broeren, Executive Vice President.
 
Mr. and Mrs. Marion Herman became the proud grandparents of a granddaughter born Nov. 24th to Mr. and Mrs. Robert Herman of Fredonia.  She was named Caryn Beth.
 
Nancy Lynn Hedler and Thomas James Woods were united in marriage on Sat. Nov. 11, 1972, at St. Hedwig’s Catholic Church, Thorp.
 
Paul George Morrison, 5, died at Sacred Heart Hospital, Eau Claire, Fri. Dec. 1, of Cystic Fibrosis.
 
Mrs. Anton Long, 77, died Sat. night at Victory Memorial Hospital.
 
10 Years Ago (1987)
 
A daughter Kayla Jo was born to Mr. and Mrs. Jerry Sniegowski of St. Louis, MO on Fri. Nov. 27, 1987.
 
Helen J. Nesvacil, 68, Cadott, died Sun. Dec. 6, 1987 at the Golden Age Nursing Home in Chippewa Falls.
 
Adam F. Path, 79, of Fayetteville, Ark., died Fri. Nov. 6, 1987 at Springfield, MO.
 
Gerald Ovyn, 73, Stanley, died Dec. 6, 1987 at St. Joseph’s Hospital, Marshfield.
 
Spring Valley – Robert Smasal of Chippewa Falls passed away at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Chippewa Falls Tues. morning.
 
Roger Creek – Mr. and Mrs. Mel Haas received word of a new granddaughter born Fri. Dec. 4 at Luther Hospital, Eau Claire to Gail and Carolyn Haas of Chippewa Falls.  Her name is Krista Lee.
