100 Years Ago (1898)
A son was born to Mr. and Mrs. Otto Warner on Thurs. Last; Dr.
McCutcheon attending. A son was born to Mr. and Mrs. M.
McCaffery, of the Town of Thorp, the fore part of last week.
Supervisors: E. R. Wiley, E. Lindquist, Mat Brunner, J. J. Hays and Ole
Samulson are attending the adjourned session of the county board at
Neillsville this week. W. S. Parks, of Eidsvold, began work as
bookkeeper at Nye, Lusk & Hudson’s lumber office on Mon. Ernest Barrett
is filling Mr. Park’s position as general manager of Nye, Lusk &
Hudson’s store at Eidsvold, also bookkeeper and deputy postmaster.
Arthur Beilfuss, who has been learning the art of telegraphy and
assisting depot agent Culler for several months, has secured a position
as operator for the Central Company at Chelsea and began his duties at
that point on Fri. last. 75 Years Ago (1923)
Worden – A son was born to Mr. and Mrs. Albert Wink.
Neiman’s Corner – Mrs. M. Slawicka died Tues. morning after a long
illness. Gregoire’s Corner – A son was born to Mr. and Mrs.
Oemig, Sat. Jan. 13. Chas. Herman has purchased the Jos. Newman
furniture store and stock and will continue the business. Mr.
and Mrs. J. W. Warner are rejoicing over the birth of a son, the event
occurring on Mon. Jan. 15th. Mrs. A. M. Jablonski, residing in
the Town of Taft, died at the Chippewa Hospital on Fri. last, after
undergoing an operation. The annual meeting of the Wild Cherry
Cheese Co. was held at their factory in the Town of Thorp on Sat. Jan.
20th and the following officers were elected: Mike Malinowski, pres.;
Louis Twardowski, vice-pres.; St. Mazurka, treas.; Edw. Karlen, Sec’y;
Frank Wyczawski, manager. Directors: St. Swinton, Jacob Smith,
Andrew Brenner and Anton Swierkowski. 50 Years Ago
(1948) With a high wind and drifting snow at its peak
Tues. at 4:15 p.m., death came to a little baby boy in a three-car
collision, one mile west and a mile and a half north of Thorp.
Steve William, Route 2 towing Olf F. Nelson, Route 2, in a car without a
motor going north, collided head-on with a car driven by Wilfred Haas,
Route 3. Passengers in the Haas care were his wife and a 3 ˝ month
old baby, Allen, who died as a result of a skull fracture.
Stanley Kaleta, 62, passed away suddenly of heart trouble Tues.
afternoon in the village while preparing to return to his home in the
Town of Reseburg by car. Martin Soda, 73, passed away at his
home in the village on Fri. morning, Jan. 16, 1948. 25
years Ago (1973) Mike LaVick, son of Mr. and Mrs. Chas.
LaVick, Thorp, will be presented the Eagle Scout Award at a Court of
Honor to be held at the Legion Hall here Sat. evening. John
Osowski, 53, died suddenly at his home, Tues. Jan. 23. Kermit
Cook, 53, formerly of Thorp, and presently of Princeton, Ill., died
suddenly at the Perry Memorial Hospital in Princeton, Ill. Frank
M. Meznarich, 67, died Thurs. at St. Joseph’s Hospital, Marshfield.
Walter David Telisak, 37, resident of Milwaukee, former resident of the
Town of Colburn, died in Milwaukee. 10 Years Ago (1988)
Lottie Kubiszewski, 80, died Fri. Jan. 22, 1988 at the Marshfield
Clinic. Thomas Hedler, 88, Thorp, died Sun. night, Jan. 24, 1988
at Thorp Care Center. Brandon Martin, son of Daniel and Renee
Slowiak was baptized Sun. Jan. 24, 1988 by Father John Puerner at St.
Bernard’s-St. Hedwig’s Church.
