100 Years Ago (1898)

A daughter was born to Mr. and Mrs. W. C. Boardman, of Eidsvold on the 22nd ult.
 
Rev. A. E. Muehlenkamp of Athens, who conducted services at the Catholic church here for several months past is succeeded by Rev. Jas. Korczyk, pastor of St. Hedwig’s Polish Catholic Church, east of the village and will in the future look after both charges.
 
75 Years Ago (1923)
 
Neiman’s Corner – The funeral of Peter Kendziora who died last Fri. took place from St. Hedwig’s Church, Mon. morning.
 
Reseburg – Emil Ehlert and Wm. Biddle have moved the old school building from District No. 3 to their farms in the southwest part of the town. They cut the building in two and no doubt will remodel them into up-to-date residences.
 
Albert Burrington, an aged and much respected resident of the Town of Reseburg, died very suddenly at his farm home in that town on Tues. morning.
 
50 Years Ago (1948)
 
John Klick, 53, Route 3, Thorp, died of injuries sustained when struck by a car on the highway before he arrived at the Stanley Hospital last Wed. evening, Jan. 21.
 
A lovely winter wedding took place at the Holy Family Catholic Church of Willard, Wis., on Sat. Jan. 10th, when Agnes Klapatauskas, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Mike Klapatauskas, Sr. of Thorp, became the bride of Frank Debevec, son of Mr. Anton Debevec, of Willard.
 
Mr. and Mrs. John Filipek, of Chicago, are the proud parents of a 7 ½ pound baby boy, Lawrence John, born Jan. 16, 1948.  Mrs. Filipek will be remembered as Miss Rose Wojt.
 
On Mon. evening, fifty Thorp Businessmen including doctor, lawyer, merchant, chief, turned out in weather when the thermometer, whipped by a northerly wind, read 15 degrees below the zero mark, to attend a meeting scheduled that night for the purpose of organizing a Thorp Businessmen’s association.
 
Breezy Hill – The milk house on Mrs. Henry Kellar’s farm here caught fire Tuesday evening and burned with all the contents.  With the assistance of nearby neighbors the other buildings were saved, although a strong wind was blowing from the west.
 
A son, Garry Wayne, eight and one-half pounds, was born to Mr. and Mrs. Don Osburn on Jan. 6, 1948.
 
A baby girl weight 6 pounds, 14 ounces was born to Mr. and Mrs. Floyd Cook on Jan. 22, at St. Joseph’s Hospital at Chippewa Falls.
 
Henry Olszewski, 59, for forty-eight years a resident of Thorp, died suddenly Jan. 16, 1948, of heart failure.
 
Neiman’s Corner – Word was received from Staff Sergeant and Mrs. Frank P. Urbaniak, of Tampa, Florida, that a son was born to them Jan. 16.  Mrs. Urbaniak will be remembered as Charlotte Woiculis.
 
25 years Ago (1973)
 
The former Wolf Drug Store building was prepared Fri. for the heavy equipment to completely demolish the building on making way for a customer parking lot for the Peoples Exchange Bank here.
 
Candace Lenore Slota, daughter of Mrs. Lenore Slota, Thorp, and the late Dr. B. R. Slota, became the bride of Jerry Brenner, son of Mr. and Mrs. LeRoy Brenner, Route 2, Thorp, on Dec. 2nd at St. Bernard’s Church, Thorp.
 
Chet S. Milas, 49, Girard, Ohio, died Fri. Jan. 5 at St. Elizabeth Hospital, Youngstown, Ohio.
 
William Christ Kuester, 80, died Mon. Jan. 22, of an apparent heart attack.
 
Reseburg – Born to Mr. and Mrs. Duane Anderson, a baby boy on Jan. 24th.
 
Thorp’s Cardinals clinched the Eastern Cloverbelt title with a 58-47 win over Neillsville Fri. night.
 
100 skaters completed in the 24th annual ice carnival.  At the close of events, chosen for King and Queen respectively was Paul McCatharn, son of Mrs. Jeanette McCatharn of Thorp and Julianne Zukowski, rural Thorp.
 
10 Years Ago (1988)
 
Verna (Ma) Teclaw, 89, Thorp, died Tues. Feb. 2, 1988 at Victory Memorial Hospital, Stanley.
 
Ann Juzwiak, 68, Thorp, died Fri. Jan. 29, 1988 at Sacred Heart Hospital, Eau Claire.
 
An Eau Claire woman and her two and one-half month old baby were killed Sun. Jan. 31 when the vehicle in which they were riding was struck broadside by a Lublin man’s vehicle.  Jason Pember, Born Nov. 13, 1987, was pronounced dead at 6:34 p.m. Sun. at Victory Memorial Hospital in Stanley.  His mother Julie Pember, 37, was pronounced dead at 1:55 a.m. Mon. at Ramsey County Medical Center in St. Paul.  Pember’s daughter Sonya, 2, remains in critical condition at Sacred Heart Hospital in Eau Claire.
 
Julie Sydejko, 93, formerly of Chippewa Falls, died Fri. Jan. 29, 1988 at the Chippewa Manor Nursing Home. 
 
Wallace Blazel, 65, Milwaukee, died Jan. 25, 1988 at St. Luke’s Hospital in Milwaukee.
 
Area students named to the Honor Roll at Chippewa Valley Technical College, Eau Claire for the first semester 1987-88 were: Deborah Burzynski, Paul Ebben, Doris Haas, Howard Horn, Pamela Lewan, Connaught Lindquist, Yvonne Messing, Edwin Salzberg, Lynette Van Ert, Diane Verkuilen, George Wood, Walter Wood and Karen Zoromski.
 
Named to the Dean’s List of top scholars in their respective schools at the University of Wisconsin-Madison were: Cindy Mathison, Eric Zoromski.
