100 Years Ago (1898)

Stanley Sunbeams – It is reported that Stanley is to have a resident dentist in the person of E. F. Burns of Chicago.
 
Dr. McKittrick reports the birth of a daughter to Mr. and Mrs. Mike Gorman, the event occurring on Thurs. last.
 
The Town of Mead is about to put in a steel bridge across the Eau Clarie River just west of the Alton farm, at a cost of $1,350.
 
A letter from Henry H. Christian the colored boy employed in this office for several years during the eighties, informs us of his recent marriage.
 
75 Years Ago (1923)

 
Pozen – a daughter was born to Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Sopiarz last week.
 
Neiman’s Corner – The cheese factory here paid 60¢ net for butter fat and $2.40 for 100 lbs. milk for the first half of Jan.
 
John Schmidt, 83, died at the home of his son Charles Schmidt in this village on Sat. Feb. 10th.
 
A most severe blizzard followed by zero weather set in on Tues. afternoon, blocking highways in all directions with huge banks of snow.
 
A large crowd attended the masquerade here on Fri. evening last.  The prizes were awarded as follows: Best group: Miss Ruby Warner, Miss Mayme Dekoski, Mesdames L. E. Bogumill, Jno, S. Bogumill, Joe Neiman, Joe Decker; best costume gent, Russell Mead; best costume ladies, Marion Catt and Mrs. Carl Becker; comic, Leon Bogumill.
 
McKee Peeples, for the past seven year’s depot agent for the Soo Line here, was succeeded by J. H. Demler on Thurs. last.  Mr. Demler comes from Medford where he held a similar position on the Soo for several years.  Since Mr. Peeples took charge here seven years ago the annual earnings of Thorp station have increased over $50,000.
 
50 Years Ago (1948)

 
Miss Colleen Waverly Biddle, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Melvin Biddle and Robert Charles Herman, son of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Herman, both of this village, were joined in the holy bands of matrimony by Father A. M. Muckerheide at St. Bernard’s Catholic Church here on Sat. morning, Feb. 7th.
 
Mrs. Emma Harter, Waukesha, announce the marriage of her daughter, Donna Pearl, to Mr. Wright Leslie Vander Wegen, son of Mrs. Florence Vander Wegen, of thorp, on Feb. 3rd.
 
Carl Buss, 61, was found dead in bed Wed. morning at the Ammentorp farm in the Town of Longwood, where he worked and lived.
 
John M. Glasshof, 74, former resident of Thorp and Holcombe, died at his home in Minneapolis on Feb. 2, 1948.
 
Mr. and Mrs. Virgil Schmitt announce the birth of a son, Jan. 28th.
 
Mr. and Mrs. Emil Henke and family and Mrs. Louie Henke drove to Marshfield Sun. to attend Capping Ceremonies at St. Joseph’s School of Nursing.  Their daughter Ruth was one of the students to receive the nurse’s cap.
 
Around The Corner – News has been received of a birth of a son to Mr. and Mrs. Edwin Filipiak of Chicago. They named him James Allan.
 
25 years Ago (1973)

 
Martin Wisniewski, 73, died at Victory Memorial Hospital Sat. morning.
 
Leo C. Ryniec, 75, entered rest Feb. 1, 1973, at Victory Memorial Hospital.
 
Charles E. Mitz, 80, Route 1, Stanley, died Sun. morning at Luther Hospital, Eau Claire.
 
Mrs. Dorothy Graham, 82, passed away suddenly Sun. evening, Feb. 4, at Victory Memorial Nursing Home, Stanley. 
 
Walter Needham, 69, of Owen, died Sun. Feb. 11, at St. Joseph’s Hospital, Marshfield.
 
Henry Awe, 88, Withee, died Sun. Feb. 11, at the Memorial Hospital in Neillsville.
 
Altoona Railroaders and Thorp’s Cards took different routes Fri. night, but both teams got the same results to cap unbeaten seasons in their respective divisions of the Cloverbelt Conference.
 
10 Years Ago (1988)

 
On Sun. Feb. 13, the Thorp FBLA Chapter placed third in the Outstanding Regional Leadership Conference event at the Region II Leadership Conference in Wausau.  AT the Conference, Thorp placed third in the overall competition by receiving 4 first, 2 seconds 4 fourths and 3 fifths.
 
Cadet Martin Olson, son of Rev. Robert and Bernice Olson of Thorp, is serving a four-month term as company commander, thereby achieving one of the highest positions in the cadet chain-of-command at the U. S. Military academy at West Point.
 
Earl and Marcie Larson are happy to announce the birth of Paul Joseph, Born Mon. Feb. 8, 1988 at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Marshfield.
 
Ella Miller, 89, Withee, died Wed. Feb. 10, 1988 at Sacred Heart Hospital, Eau Claire.
 
Bertha (Sachs) Russell, 88, died Thurs. Feb. 11, 1988 at the Oakwood Villa Nursing Home in Altoona.
 
Antone (Tony) Boyarski, 75, of Bothell, Wash., formerly of Thorp, died Jan. 27, 1988.
 
Ruth Brown, 72, Balsam Lake, Wis., died Sun. Feb. 7, 1988 at St. Croix Memorial Hospital, St. Croix Falls.
 
Edwin Wiederecht, 88, Thorp, died Mon. Feb. 8, 1988 at the Victory Memorial Hospital Emergency Room, at Stanley.
 
Rebecca Hoffman, daughter of Roger and Lucille Hoffman, Thorp, was named to the Dean’s List of the College of Saint Theresa in Winona, Minn. for the first semester of the 1987-88 academic years.
 
Leah Paulsen, a 1987 graduate of Thorp High School, has been named an associate member of Beta Beta Beta in recognition of her interest in biology and wiliness to participate in activities of Gamma Omicron Chapter of Hamline University in St. Paul.
 
Jennifer Polnaszek of Thorp has been named to the 1988 edition of who’s who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges.  Polnaszek, a nursing major, is at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire.
 
Joann Noah, daughter of Darlene Noah of Thorp, was graduated Cum Laude from the University of Wisconsin-Stout with a bachelor’s degree in child development and family life.
