100 Years Ago (1898)

Stanley voted to incorporate as a city on Tues., 199 for and 40 against.
 
Ben Krom accompanied a car load of livestock, which he had purchased in this vicinity, to the Chicago market on Sun. last.
 
Everard Sterling recently completed the winter term of school in the Roger Creek District, and has also been re-engaged to teach the spring term.
 
Dr. McCutcheon amputated the index finger of Mrs. Jas. Batam’s right hand on Tues., the same having been injured some days since in using a crochet needle.
 
E. L. Snyder writes to his wife under date of Feb. 18th, from Port Townsend, that his party is still waiting for the arrival of the steamer “Townsend,” upon which they had secured passage for Copper River, Alaska.  The boys are evidently not relishing the delay.  The boat was expected at any time.
 
Later – A letter dated Feb. 24th, states that the party loaded their freight and went aboard the “Rival” on that day and would start on the following day on their long journey.
 
Stanley Sunbeams – J. D. Faulkner has started a bakery and restaurant on Willard St. and L. McKesson, flour and feed store on Bartlett St.
 
A son was born to Mr. and Mrs. Jacob Jacobson, of the Town of Thorp on Sun. last.
 
75 Years Ago (1923)

 
Eidsvold – Born to Mr. and Mrs. Sabon Taylor, on Sun. morning, Feb. 25th, a baby girl.
 
Pozen – A son was born to Mr. and Mrs. John Broda last week.
 
A general thaw has been the order for several days and the snow is fast disappearing.
 
Following is a list of officers of the Thorp Volunteer Fire Co.: Pres.-W. J. Frank, Vice-Pres.-L. P. Walsdorf, Treas.-R. G. Lawrence, Directors-C. W. Wolf, M. E. Lesniewski, G. H. Plucinski, Fire Chief-C. E. Burss, Assistant-R. J. Brunner, Fire Marshalls-C. E. Burss and R. J. Brunner.
 
50 Years Ago (1948)

 
Joe Shores 81, a resident of this community for 53 years, passed away of old age infirmities on Feb. 13, 1948, at the home of his son, Ivan at Withee.
 
Karen Janice, three month old daughter, of Mr. and Mrs. Anton Hendricks, of the Town of Mead, died at the Chippewa Falls Hospital on Feb. 24, 1948 of pneumonia which followed an attack of whipping cough.
 
Adolph Judycki, 59, died at St. Joseph’s Hospital, Chippewa Falls, on Wed. evening.
 
Miss Mary Bogumill, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ed. Bogumill, of Thorp, became the bride of Robert Christenson, son of Mr. and Mrs. A. Christenson, of Madison, at St. Bernard’s Catholic Church at Madison on Fri. morning, Feb. 10th.
 
Fire caused by a spark from the chimney at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Ted Glowacki, threatened to destroy the entire farm structure last Wed. noon.
 
White Birch – Mr. and Mrs. Alfred Frank are the proud parents of a seven and one-half pound daughter, who was born at the Victory Hospital on Thurs.  They named her Caroline.
 
Breezy Hill – Anton Benzschawel purchased the forty acres of pasture land south of the cheese factory here of Al Zais, of Boyd and Ed. Catt of Stanley recently.
 
A girl, Cheryl Ann, was born to Mr. and Mrs. Wally Dums, of Chicago on Feb. 12th.
 
Worden – A baby girl arrived to grace the home of Mr. and Mrs. Francis Ketterhagen on Sun. Feb. 22, at the Victory Hospital.
 
Roger Creek – A son was born to Mr. and Mrs. Gerald Berres on Sun. Feb. 22, at the Victory Hospital.
 
25 Years Ago (1973)
 
Janay Marie was born Feb. 19 at St. Vincent Hospital in Green Bay to Mr. and Mrs. David Wittek.
 
Milton K. Johnson, 85, resident of Route 3, Stanley, Town of Thorp, passed away Wed. at Victory Memorial Hospital, Stanley.
 
Felix B. Zukowski, 62, died of an apparent heart attack at his home on Gilman SR, Sat. morning, Feb. 24th.
 
Thorp’s Cardinals downed Owen-Withee at Cadott Sat. night, 64-53 and advanced to a regional tournament game against Marathon Fri. night.
 
Raymond Kenney, 53, a former resident of this area died Feb. 17 at the Veterans Hospital, Hines, Ill.
 
10 Years Ago (1988)

 
Wanda Losiewicz, 72, Thorp, died Sun. Feb. 28, 1988 at St. Joseph’s Hospital, Marshfield.
 
Edward Witek, 62, Lublin, died at Medford Memorial Hospital, Thurs. Feb. 25, 1988.
 
Stanley J. Symbal, Stanley, 66, died Thurs. Feb. 25, 1988 at Victory Memorial Hospital.
 
A baby girl was born on Feb. 24, 1988 to Mr. and Mrs. Tim Morin of White Bear Lake, MN.  They named her Sarah Jean.
 
The Thorp High School boys’ basketball team posted the best record on either side of the Cloverbelt Conference this season, but their trophy will read “Cloverbelt Eastern Division Champions”, with Osseo-Fairchild taking home the overall Cloverbelt title.
 
Debra Swaney, Thorp and Tim Lewan, Lublin, exchanged marriage vows on Sat. Feb. 20, 1988 at Church of The Brethren, Stanley.
