100 Years Ago (1898)

A son was born to Mr. and Mrs. Sam Christianson on Mon.; Dr. McCutcheon, attending physician.
 
Stanley Sunbeams – March 7th a daughter was born to Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Klauck. – John Wise and Petra Anderson were married here on Sat. last.
 
A daughter was born to Dr. and Mrs. P. McKitrick on Mon. last.
 
Peter Biddle and Jerry Asselin completed their logging job north of town last week having banked nearly 600,000 feet for the N. W. L. Co.
 
J. B. Clark, of Eau Claire, sold his farm, located in the Town of Worden to Anton Micke, of Dundas, Wis. last week.  The price was $1,900.
 
Twin girls were born to Mr. and Mrs. Frank David of the Town of Worden, on the 4th inst.
 
Town Treasurers: Thos. Murphy of Withee Township, John Landry of Reseburg, Ed. Foley of Worden and Solon Larson of Thorp are at Neillsville today squaring up their accounts.
 
The Thorp Republican, established here about six months ago, suspended publication last week, evidently from lack of patronage as the following would indicate: “You failed to pay your subscription.  We can’t do business any more.”
 
75 Years Ago (1923)
 
Henderson’s Corner – A daughter was born to Mr. and Mrs. Oscar Wright at the home of Mrs. Anna McCafferty, March 7th and a daughter to Mr. and Mrs. Will McCafferty at Victory Hospital, March 8th.  Both new comers are granddaughters of Mrs. Anna McCafferty.
 
Captain Johannes Karl Audorff, at the age of 103 years, 9 months and 11 days was found dead in his rocking chair at 6:20 a.m. on March 7, 1923 at Butlerville.
 
Egbert Mead, brother of Wm. Mead of this village and a resident here many years ago, died at his home at Sumner, Wash. on Feb. 6th.
 
50 Years Ago (1948)
 
Edward Karlen Sr., 84, passed away at the home of his son Edward Jr., near Stanley, of the infirmities of old age, on Sun. March 7, 1948.
 
Minnie Butler was born on a f arm near Verona, Dane County Dec. 18, 1869, the second child of William and Emily Brown, passed away March 6, 1948, at the home of Mrs. Georgia Collins, her niece at Butlerville.
 
Butler – Born to Mr. and Mrs. V. Kuehl on Mon. the 8th a baby daughter, Ione Ruth.
 
Mrs. Wm. Smith, 74, died on Sun. March 7th at her farm home at Eidsvold.
 
Around the Corner – Mr. and Mrs. Lewis Lewan are the proud parents of a baby boy.  Mrs. Lewan is the former Virginia Nowak.
 
Neiman’s Corner – Mr. and Mrs. Ray Paulis, of Gilman moved into the neighborhood recently, the former is employed at the Town of Withee Dairy Co. as cheesemaker.
 
25 Years Ago (1973)
 
Very Reverend Anthony Matla, 61, died Mon. March 12, of a heart attack.  He taught Polish Culture School here in Thorp.
 
Joan Morgan, a high school senior from Thorp, has been honored as a district winner in the 16th annual scholarship competition sponsored by Thorp Finance Corp.
 
John Nied, a student at Wisconsin State University, River Falls, has been appointed World Ambassador for the State of West Virginia by Arch A. Moore, Jr., Governor of West Virginia.
 
A boy was born on March 3, 1973 to Mr. and Mrs. Marvin Verkuilen.  His name is Gregory Russell.
 
Word has been received at the Joe Reichert home of the arrival of a baby daughter, Sarah Elizabeth, to Sgt. and Mr. Robert Reichert of San Angelo, Texas, on March 10th.
 
Ella Coates Johnson, formerly of Thorp passed away March 6, 1973.  She has resided in Chicago for the past several years.
 
Reseburg – Born to Mr. and Mrs. George Grajkowski of Mendota Heights, Minn., a baby girl, Sarah Robin, on March 9th.   Grandparents are Mr. and Mrs. Frank Sonnentag of Greenwood and Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Grajkowski.
 
10 Years Ago (1988)
 
Donald Hassing, 64, of Addison, Ill., formerly of Thorp, passed away Feb. 13, 1988 enroute to Elmhurst Memorial Hospital.
 
Clarence Schunk, 81, Independence, died Tues. March 8, 1988 at Tri-County Memorial Nursing Home, Whitehall.
 
Frank Pomietlo, 90, Stanley, passes away at Victory Memorial Hospital, March 9, 1988.
 
Megan Marie, daughter of John and Patti Nowobielski was baptized on Sun. March 6, 1988 at St. Bernard-St. Hedwig’s Church.
 
Thorp native Jim Danielewicz, now coaching in Arizona, took his Bisbee, Arizona basketball team to its first state tournament recently.  Jim’s team won the conference championship and sported a 16-2 record.
 
On the third day of the third month this year, three little surprises came to Mark and Sue Schaus of South Milwaukee.  Mark, formerly of Thorp and Sue are the proud parents of a six pound, one ounce boy, Samuel August, and two five pound girls, Laureen Marie and Malory Jane.
