100 Years Ago (1898)

Stanley Sunbeams – Morris Hulles, who built a pop factory south of the village last winter, brought his first load of this cooling beverage into town on Tuesday.
 
The people of Thorp should be in mind that with the proper kind of hustling factories might be secure that would not only give employment to those desiring work, but would greatly add to the citizenship, taxable property, and commercial success of our town.  The town is on the upgrade now, and with a display of enterprise might be made to grow rapidly. Let every body talk up and work for the town.
 
75 Years Ago (1923)
 
Bobb’s Mill – A daughter was born to Mr. and Mrs. Wm Pagel on April 4.
 
Eidsvold – Born to Mr. and Mrs. John Kocherer on April 3rd a son.
 
John Slota sold the E. Fountain farm in the Town of Thorp last week to Paul Harycki.
 
Following are the officers elected in the village of Lublin: Pres. A. J. Ogurek; Clerk, M. J. Zagorski; Treas. John Czajkowski; and Assessor, A. J. Racikoski.

Harry Landry recently resigned as teacher of a school in the Town of Roosevelt and E. D. Coen of Westboro now teaches the school.  Mr. Landry has gone to Kilbourn, Wis., where he has accepted a position as a bookkeeper.
 
Cold, freezing weather has been experienced during the entire present month so far in this vicinity. On Sat. last a blizzard with the wind from the northeast was accompanied by a fall of about ten inches of snow much of which is with us.  The present outlook indicates a late spring.
 
Martin Borowick, 54, was killed on the Soo Line track just outside the village on Sat. night last.  The body was discovered on Sun. Morning.  He was evidently struck by a passing train during the night.
 
50 Years Ago (1948)
 
Gilbert O’Keefe, 72, who moved from Thorp to Milwaukee in 1939, died at his home there on March 26th.
 
Mrs. Margaret Leibole, 90, passed away Sat. March 28, 1948 at the hospital at Chippewa Falls of the infirmities of old age.
 
Alvin Kubera, son of Mr. and Mrs. Andrew Kubera, of Thorp and Marjorie Ann Korn, the daughter of Mrs. Diana Jackson, Lindsay, Calif. and Harvey Gardner, Hayward, were united in marriage at St. Hedwig’s Church on Sat. April 3rd.
 
Thorp Frozen Food Locker, newest Thorp business, which is termed as the most modernistic and complete Frigidaire food locker plants in Northern Wis. will hold its formal opening this Fri. and Sat. April 9th and 10th.
 
Mr. and Mrs. Ed Wynimko are the proud parents of a baby girl born April 4th at the Stanley Hospital.
 
Breezy Hill – Mis Lena Beckman and Arbor Drinkwine, were married in Eau Claire, Sat. afternoon, spent Sat. night and Sun. at the former’s home here leaving for Solon Springs, to visit the groom’s parents.
 
A baby girl was born to Mr. and Mrs. Val Wyczawski, of the Town of Reseburg at the Victory Hospital in Stanley on Sat. April 3rd.
 
Word was received here that a baby boy was born to Mr. and Mrs. Victory Konieczny on April 2nd.  Mrs. Konieczny is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Burzinski of Thorp.
 
Gilman – Born to Mr. and Mrs. John Podolak, twins, a girl and a boy on Wed.
 
25 Years Ago (1973)
 
Joseph Pabich, 66, passed away suddenly Tues. evening at his home.  Joe was the former proprietor of Pabich’s Food Mart.
 
Mrs. Evelyn Kobylinski attended the baptism of her granddaughter, Lisa Marie, on April 1st in Port Washington.  Mr. and Mrs. George Kobylinski are the parents.
 
The Reverend F. H. Sprengler who has served as pastor of St. Peter’s Lutheran Church at Dorchester for more than 27 years, and Mrs. Sprengler plan to move to Thorp, where they have purchased a home here.  Reverend Sprengler has served in the ministry for 42 years, having parishes in Thorp, Stanley and Reseburg, before going to Dorchester.
 
Mary Borek, 81, passed away at her home in Lublin, on Fri. March 23rd.
 
10 Years Ago (1988)
 
Brigid Lindquist, Thorp High School senior and Wisconsin FBLA President, will preside at the 35th Annual Future Business Leaders of America Conference to be held April 14 – 16 in Green Bay.
 
Bob Gulcynski, President of the Thorp Lions Club, congratulated Pat Soderberg this week on being named a Melvin Jones Fellow.
 
Valeria Lisiecki, 85, died Mon. April 4, 1988 at Victory Memorial Nursing Home in Stanley.
 
Ted. F. Schultz, 69, Rockford, Ill. died Sat. April 2, 1988 at his home after a long illness.
 
Harold Turner, 68, Mauston, WI passed away on Thurs. March 31, 1988 at his home.
 
Matthew and Nancy Dietrich are proud to announce the arrival of their son, Dustin Karl.  He was born on Thurs. April 7, 1988.
 
Diane Rosengren daughter of Stell and Joseph Panek of Thorp recently won the Historian Scrapbook award at the Office Education Association (OEA) Spring Leadership Conference in Green Bay.
