100 Years Ago (1898)

Eidsvold – A daughter was born to Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Ogle on Sat. last.  Walter Rublee, the barber, has returned from Stanley and together with Nate Butler they now occupy the barber shop recently vacated by H. E. Howard.
 
B. F. Rusch has torn down his old saloon building, purchased August Thielke’s store building and the same now occupies the corner lot, improving the property very much.
 
The stars and stripes wave on the water tower staff, 11 feet high, by order of the village board. The school board has also supplied the flag staff on the school building with a new flag.
 
At a regular meeting of the Thorp Fire Co. held on Monday evening the following officers were elected for the ensuing year: Pres. C. H. Sheldon; Sec. W. J. McGrogan; Treas. Jas Conner; and Chief Geo. H. Lusk.
 
75 Years Ago (1923)
 
Worden – Born to Mr. and Mrs. Eli Wenger the 29th a baby girl.
 
Pozen – A daughter was born to Mr. and Mrs. C. Sikorski April 17.
 
A daughter was born to Mr. and Mrs. Frank Graham on April 28th.
 
Steve Rempa went to Chicago yesterday where he will reside.  Mrs. Rempa preceded him there last week.
 
V. Soli has begun operations for the erection of a new residence and John Abeel is engaged in digging the cellar.
 
The Thorp Lumber Co. has a crew of carpenters engaged in erecting a building to be used to planing mill purposes.  The structure is being built on the Nye, Lusk & Hudson mill site, the old saw mill having been razed recently.
 
50 Years Ago (1948)
 
Russell Butek, 8 year old son of Mr. and Mrs. Leonard Butek, Route 2, Gilman, died at Sacred Heart Hospital, Eau Claire Saturday.  He had suffered a fractured skull when he was struck by a car on April 19th.
 
A seven and one-fourth pound baby girl was born to Mr. and Mrs. Reuben Schmidt on April 16, at the Victory Hospital in Stanley. They named her Mavis Lynn.
 
George J. Schmidt has sold his farm to Bill Brzezinski. The Schmidt family is now residing on the Stanley Ditz Place northwest of Thorp.
 
Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence C. Stumph, Jr. announce the birth of a baby boy, born Sun. April 25th at the Victory Hospital, Stanley.  Mrs. Stumph is the former Noni Fisher, of Eau Claire, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. H. Oldroyd of Thorp.
 
Neiman’s Corner – Mrs. George Meske spent a week in Marshfield, getting acquainted with her granddaughter, Rose Ann, who was born to Mr. and Mrs. John Bloczynski, April 15th at St. Joseph’s Hospital.
 
25 Years Ago (1973)
 
Augustine Westfeldt, Stanley, 32, died at the Wausau North Hospital Fri. morning as the result of injuries when he fell from a ladder.
 
Winter comes to Thorp Town May 2nd, snow on sidewalks and Main Street plus it was staying.
 
Each year since 1965, the Thorp High School faculty has selected a student to represent Thorp in applying for a Wisconsin State Telephone Foundation Scholarship.  Wayne Belanger, son of Mr. and Mrs. Eldon Belanger of Thorp, has been selected to represent Thorp in applying for a Foundation $1,000 scholarship.
 
Mr. and Mrs. Russ Boie are the proud parents of a baby daughter, Robin Marie, born at Waukesha Memorial Hospital on Mon. April 30th.
 
The date of April 14, 1973 was observed by two Kubera families: Andrew and Mytrie of Thorp who celebrated their 50th and Alvin and Marjorie of Black River Falls who celebrated their 25th.
 
Loren C. Wayne, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Albert Wayne, of Stanley became the bride of Donald E. Pawlak, son of Mr. and Mrs. Benjamin Pawlak, Thorp, Sat. March 24, at St. Hedwig’s Chapel.
 
United Chapel, Las Vegas, Nevada was the setting chosen for the four o’clock marriage of Janice Boie and Jerry Raimer on Tues. March 27.
 
Mrs. Anna Smitke passed away early Fri. morning at Memorial Hospital in Neillsville on April 27, 1973.
 
Miles Ryland Shock, 72, Stanley, died Wed. afternoon at Luther Hospital in Eau Claire.
 
10 Years Ago (1988)
 
Tara Hackbarth, a junior at Thorp High School, has received a scholarship to attend the Seventh Annual Business World Conference to be held at Lawrence University in Appleton this summer.
 
Rose Zubell, 82, Gilman, died Sun. May 1, 1988 at St. Joseph’s Hospital, Chippewa Falls.
 
Martha Cesafsky Folczyk, 102, Stanley, died April 29, 1988 at Victory Memorial Nursing Home, Stanley.
 
John L. Barager, 66, Owen died Thurs. April 28, 1988 at his apartment of an apparent heart attack.
 
The United States Achievement Academy has named Catherine (Miller) Stuttgen as a National Collegiate Award winner in Elementary education.
 
Rebecca Hoffman, daughter of Roger and Lucille Hoffman of Thorp, was among the senior art majors at the College of Saint Theresa in Winona, MN, to take part in Senior Art Exhibitions this year.
