100 Years Ago (1898)

A son was born to Mr. and Mrs. A. J. Krom on Fri. last, May 20th.
 
A son was born to Mr. and Mrs. Walter Rublee on Tues. May 17th.
 
The farm house of Mrs. Kronberg mother of the Kronberg Brothers, located northwest of the village, burned to the ground on the 13th inst.
 
The construction crews of the Wisconsin Telephone Co., who are erecting a new line from Chippewa Falls to Stevens Point, have reached this point from the west and are now working east of here with a crew of fifty men.  The work done and all materials used are of the best and most substantial kind, four heavy copper wires being put up.  The local station is located in the office of the Forest Queen House, where a handsome sound proof booth will be placed in the course of a few days.  The line will be in complete working order in about two weeks.
 
Geo. W. Smith has sold his house and lot to N. L. Butler, and moved to Mr. Sheldon’s farm up in Taylor Co.
 
75 Years Ago (1923)

 
Pozen – Mr. and Mrs. Carol Sikowski had their baby baptized on Sun.
 
On Pentecost Sun., May 20, at 4 p.m. Mrs. Wm. Krause passed away, at the hospital in Chippewa Falls, at which place the deceased had undergone two operations.
 
Miss Agnes Szerlong, daughter of Mrs. P. Szerlong, of the Town of Withee and Mr. Leon Persak, of Minneapolis were united in marriage at St. Hedwig’s Church on Mon.
 
Miss Rose Dranginis, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Julian Dranginis, of the Town of Reseburg and Mr. Stanley Budzinski were united in marriage at St. Hedwig’s Church on Tues. May 15th.
 
A delegation representing the village board of trustees, including village president C. W. Wolf, Geo. Zillmann, Frank Anyzewski and L. P. Walsdorf visited Madison last week to consult state engineers regarding the sewer disposal plant to be built at the terminal of the local sewerage system in this village this summer.
 
50 Years Ago (1948)
 
August Walsdorf, 74, a resident of Thorp for many years, died at his home here on Mon. May 17th, after an illness of several months.
 
Mr. and Mrs. Mike Sneider Jr. who have been residing in Selah, Wash. for several years, have sold the majority of their property there and returned to Thorp.
 
Mitterhoffer – Word was received here that Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Waichulis, of Chicago, are the proud parents of a bouncing baby boy, born April 15th.  Mrs. Waichulis will be remembered here as Dawn Swim.
 
Rolling Meadows – Mr. and Mrs. Victor Romanowicz are the proud parents of a baby boy born May 13.  They named him John James.
 
Butler – A son was born to Mr. and Mrs. Louis Malecki, Sun. May 9th at the Victory Hospital at Stanley.
 
Butler – Victor Kuehl moved his family on Sun. into the old Hugo Kuehl house. Victor was born in this house 26 years ago this summer.
 
Janet Marie, seven and one-half pound baby girl, arrived at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Ray Baldeschwiler of the Town of Thorp, on Thurs. May 13th.
 
A very pretty wedding took place on Sat. May 1st at St. Bernard’s Catholic Church when Father Muckerheide united in holy matrimony, Henry Haas, son of Mr. and Mrs. Casper Haas, of Thorp and Marian Ammentorp, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. E. Ammentorp of Withee.
 
25 Years Ago (1973)
 
Judy Anderson, 12, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Anderson, was pronounced dead on arrival at the Stanley Hospital after the car driven by her brother, was hit by a truck at 8 a.m. Thursday.
 
Frank Pietras, 82, passed away at Victory Memorial Hospital, Stanley on Sun. May 27th.
 
Mr. and Mrs. Don Kostelecky are the proud parents of a baby daughter, named Terry Grace who was born on Thurs. May 15th at the St. Joseph’s Hospital, Chippewa Falls.
 
Mike Milewski, 63, passed away at his home of cancer on May 23, 1973.
 
Services were held for Mrs. John (Joanne) Lesnecki, 61, Owen, Thurs. at Holy Rosary Catholic Church, Owen.
 
Dennis C. Karnopp son of Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Karnopp, Thorp, was among the recent graduates at ceremonies held at UW-Stout at Menomonie.
 
Mitterhoffer – On May 20, Terry Lee Klewicki was baptized in Holy Ghost Church, Chippewa Falls.
 
10 Years Ago (1988)
 
Louis Pagel, 73, Withee, former Thorp resident, died at Owen-Withee Family Clinic on Mon. May 16, 1988.
 
Joseph Panek, 83, Thorp, died Sat. May 14, 1988 at St. Joseph’s Hospital, Marshfield.
 
John Kowalski, 89, Stanley, died Tues. May 10, 1988.
 
Corney Brunett and Kim Harycki have been selected as Thorp’s representative to Badger Boy and Girls State this summer.
 
Elda Wald, 74, of Thorp, died Sat. May 14, 1988 at St. Joseph’s Hospital, Marshfield.
 
Rebekah Hoffman, daughter of Roger and Lucille Hoffman, Thorp, a graduate of Thorp High School received her Bachelor of Arts degree with a major in Art.
 
Thorp Attorney Charles Senn, received a Certificate of Achievement recently from Catherine Furay, President of the State Bar’s Young Lawyers Division for his assistance in the development of a Videotape entitled “Managing Farm Credit”: Debit of Alive.
