100 Years Ago (1898)

A daughter was born to Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Vetterkind, of Sterling, on Aug. 24th.
 
Bobb’s Mill – Jno Marshall and Chas. Green are digging a well on the school grounds at Sterling. The Poppe District has also improved its school premises by drilling a well thereon.
 
Watermelons 20¢ and 15¢ each at Snyder’s this week.
 
The Public Library is gaining friends and people are beginning to realize the fact that we might have had it long ago if an effort had been made in that direction.
 
John McGrogan’s Dray team ran away on Thurs. last doing little damage aside from breaking the axle of a lumber wagon they were hitched to.  On Sun. H. Leibole and family were out driving, when the horse got away from Hank and spilled the occupants of the carriage in a heap.  Mr. Leibole was scratched up considerably but his wife and children escaped unhurt.
 
Arnold Voelker, member of the Marshfield Volunteers, who was ill with typhoid fever at Charlestown for seven or eight weeks and narrowly escaped the grim reaper, arrived at Marshfield on Sun. morning and on Mon. accompanied his sister, Miss Maggie Voelker, to this village to spend a few days with Mrs. M. Wiltgen, also his sister and other relatives.
 
75 Years Ago (1923)
 
Henderson’s Corner – Sam McNish has sold his eighty acre farm to Jas. Kern, whole land it joined.
 
A pretty wedding took place at St. Hedwig’s Church when Victoria, youngest daughter of Jacob and Sophia Rogus became the bride of Frank Dranginis, Aug. 22nd.
 
Freight train No. 22 was wrecked four miles east of Thorp on Fri. morning last, fourteen loaded cars being smashed. Trains were delayed about fourteen hours before traffic was resumed.
 
Mr. and Mrs. C. F. Stone of Lake Nebaganon were visitors here on Sat. last.  The Courier acknowledges a most pleasant call.  Mr. Stone was Thorp’s first druggist over forty years ago and also handled general merchandise.
 
The Dairy Belt Cheese Co. has purchased the old Barrett Bros. potato warehouse, office, ice-house and dam from Leonard Crossett and Riley of Waupaca.
 
J. E. Kitowski, of Berlin, was in town on Sat. last and tendered his resignation as supervising principal of the Thorp High School, which position he has held the past two years and had signed a contract to succeed himself for the ensuring year.  He was offered a position at DePere.
 
50 Years Ago (1948)
 
Edmund J. Krych, son of Mr. and Mrs. Andrew Krych and Miss Valentina Badzinski, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Walter Badzinski of Thorp, were united in marriage by Rev. Piekarski at St. Hedwig’s Church on Sat. Aug. 21st.
 
The Reseburg Congregational Church celebrated its 50th anniversary on Sun. Aug. 22, with special services.
 
James DeRouin, Route 2 Thorp enlisted for three years and chose Armored Force as his branch of service.
 
George Duell, Route 3 Thorp, enlisted for three years and chose the Coast Artillery.
 
Before an altar banked with white gladioli, Miss Eleanor Maslowski and Stanley G. Shafer were pronounced husband and wife at St. Odilo’s Church, Berwyn, Ill. on June 19th.
 
Klemens Haraburda, 82, passed away at the home of his son Edward in Lowell, Mich. Fri. Aug. 6th.
 
A seven pound nine ounce baby was born to Mr. and Mrs. Bill Boardman on Fri. Aug. 13th at the Lutheran Hospital at La Crosse.
 
A baby boy was born to Mr. and Mrs. Wilfred Hedler, of Colby at the Marshfield Hospital on Mon. Aug. 23rd.
 
25 years Ago (1973)
 
Navy Machinist’s Mate, MMFN Jack Conklin, son of Mr. and Mrs. Jack Conklin, Sr. of Thorp, has received orders to the USS LaSalle, the flagship of the Middle East, home-ported in Manama, Bahrain, Saudi Arabia.
 
Rev. Joseph Marx performed the twelve o’clock noon High Mass and Marriage Ceremony for Miss Jane Marie Hanley and Terrence Michael Boardman on Sat. Aug. 4th at Holy Family Catholic Church, Stanley.
 
Bouquets of white gladiolas and yellow mums adorned the altar of Holy Family Church in Stanley, as Miss Carol Jean Sorenson, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Wilfred Sorenson, Stanley.
 
Miss Terrie Lynn Drymiller, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Gerald Drymiller, became the bride of Paul Michael Walker, son of Mr. and Mrs. Paul Walter, Detroit, Mich. at Chapel No. 2, Kincheloe AFB.
 
10 Years Ago (1988)
 
Wladyslawa Pastuszczak, 82, Thorp, died at the Thorp Care Center, Mon. evening, Aug. 22, 1988.
 
Walter Pulokas, 85, Thorp, Town of Reseburg, died suddenly Sat. Aug. 20, 1988 while fishing at Mead Lake.
 
Jason Steven Lato, son of Roy and Judith was welcomed into the St. Bernard-St. Hedwig Parish family Sun.
 
Adam and Bonnie Niedzwiecki had their infant daughter baptized on Sun. Aug. 21, 1988.  They named the little one Michelle Lou.
 
Lublin – Mr. and Mrs. James Kosik of Willard proudly announce the birth of a son.  His name is Royce James, born Aug. 12, 1988.
 
Three area students will begin classes at the University of Wisconsin-Platteville Sept. 6.  They include, Mathew Alger, Kimberly Crabtree and Bradley Woods.
