Way Back When

 The Thorp Courier  --   November 19, 2008

Since many hunters are gearing up for the beginning of deer gun season, we found this picture from the past of a young man with his deer.  Do you know the identity of the young man, or when it was taken?  Please share any information with us and we will pass it along to our readers.

In our October 29, 2008 issue, we showed a photo taken from a postcard of Thorp of what Washington Street used to look like.  Local resident Eileen Frenette came in and identified the buildings on this block.

From the front left: a Ben Franklin store (with second floor sports shop), Lesniewski’s Carpeting and Flooring, the Farmer’s Bank building, a bowling alley, the Soo Hotel, Boehm’s Meat Market, a sweet shop, a dress shop and men’s store, and the Finish Line bar.

From the front right: Fisher’s Hardware, Crosley’s Clothing and Grocery Store, the Thorp Dairy Bar Café, Browick’s Meat Market, Jolling’s Grocery Store, Wolf’s Shoe Store, a tavern, and the Thorp Opera House.

In our November 5, 2008 issue, we displayed a picture of a man in Thorp raking leaves.  One person informed us that the picture was of Harry Hodorowski, and was taken in 1998.  However, the date on the photo itself says April 1961.  It is believed to be taken where the addition to the Thorp Methodist Church currently stands.  If you can confirm the identity of the man in the photo, or the place it was taken, please let us know.
