Reed, Jesse (30 Augl 1885 - 5 Sep 1908)

On Saturday evening a telephone message brought the sad news that Jesse Reed, son of Mr. and Mrs. James Reed of the town of Washburn, Clark County died that afternoon, Sept. 5. On Tuesday afternoon he was taken sick while working with a threshing crew in the town of Grant and went home the next morning, went to bed and never got up again. His sickness baffled medical skill from the first, coming like a paralysis of the lower limbs and extending to other parts and affecting the organs of the body. As nearly as can be ascertained his death was due to a rare disease known as Landry’s paralysis.

Jesse was born in the town of Rosendale, Fond du Lac Co., Wis., Aug. 30, 1885. He came to Clark County eight years ago with his parents who settled on their farm in Washburn. There he completed the common school course, and assisted his father on the farm. His good character, excellent habits and gentlemanly ways won for him the respect and admiration of everyone. Strong in body, intelligent, high-minded and moral, few young men of Clark County held a higher place in the esteem of their community than Jesse Reed. To the writer his death brings the loss of a dear personal friend. For a long time he furnished a weekly news letter for the readers of this paper from his neighborhood and later he was a member of our household for several weeks, winning the regards of all by his industry, skill, intelligence and gentlemanly conduct. His death comes as a hard blow upon his parents for he was an only son, one who was a reliance and help in the home, and to whose future they looked forward with hope. As far as human sympathy can aid the father, Mother and sister, will have the community’s full measure.

The funeral was held Tuesday at the home, Rev. N.F. Chapman officiating. Burial took place in the Neillsville Cemetery.

Deceased was a member of the order of Mystic Workers, and the local lodge attended the funeral in a body.
