Doty, Mrs. W.H. (1849? - 28 Jan 1909)

Mrs. W.H. Doty died at her home in Merrillan, Wis., on Jan. 28, 1909, and was interred in the Humbird Cemetery on Sunday, Feb. 1. She had been coughing since summer, fearing tuberculosis, but the final trouble was cerebral, consciousness gradually fading and paralysis resulting.

Mrs. Doty was born in Windsor, Ohio, (Ashtabula Co.) about 1849, and was married to Wm. H. Doty in 1865, soon after the close of the Civil War, through which Mr. Doty had served, first in a New York Regiment and later in an Ohio regiment.

With the Alderman family, of which Mrs. Doty was the youngest child, she came the same year to Wisconsin, Mr. Doty buying land on the Houghtonburg road south of Humbird, while Mr. Alderman, the father, homesteaded what is now in part of the village of Humbird, Clark County. After selling his farm, Mr. Doty became a harness-maker, locating first in Humbird and later in Merrillan. Mrs. Doty’s long continued illness led them to take advantage of the Soldiers’ Home at Waupaca about six years ago; but when health was regained they returned to their Merrillan home. Last October they again took advantage of the Waupaca Home, as Mrs. Doty’s lungs weakened. After Christmas impaired memory indicated impaired brain tissues. Mrs. Doty asked to be taken home.

Mrs. Doty is survived by her husband and one sister, Mrs. O.G. Trip of Tavares, Fla. Mrs. S.M. Marsh of Neillsville and Mrs. O. Sires of Hammond are nieces, Dr. L.G. Leland of Newton Falls, Ohio, Ernest Alderman of Ravenna, Ore., Wm. Alderman of Arcadia, Fla., and Lea Alderman of Oconomowoc are nephews.

Mrs. Doty resigned from the presidency of the Merrillan Relief Corps last fall on account of failing health. Her sweet dignity of manner and her quiet kindness won and kept devoted friends.
