Bio: Hein, John N. (11 Mar 1818 - 2 Jun 1899)

John Hein was born in Kissingen, Bavaria, 11 Mar 1818 and married in Munich, Germany before coming to the United States in 1850 when he was 32 years old.  His wife, Dorothea "Dora" was born in Wuertemberg, Germany about 1835.

Bad Kissingen (pictured above abt. 1850)  was one of the leading spas in the 19th and early 20th century, which in German are called "Weltbad". They differ from other spa resorts mainly through the following criteria:

Entertainment: The social life in a "Weltbad" is at least as important as the medical cure, or even more. A "Weltbad" offered many opportunities for the spa guests to spend their free time, such as exercise and sports, trips to the surroundings, theater and concert, library and games.
Guests: The "Weltbad" was attractive to guests from all five continents. Particular attention was paid to prominent visitors, who attracted more visitors, especially from nobility and upscale middle class.
Architecture: There are spa quarter, quarters with villas, areas for business and care, gardens and parks with a smooth transition into the surrounding landscape
Infrastructure and supply: Despite the small number of inhabitants, a "Weltbad" offered the guests all the contemporary comfort, which was not even common in all major cities. These include good transport connections, communication facilities (such as telegraphy and telephone on the latest state of the art), luxury goods offer, differentiated hotel and gastronomy as well as state-of-the-art technology for energy supply, water supply and sanitation.[9]
Bad Kissingen and several other of these traditional spa baths want to become a UNESCO World Heritage site under the name "Great Spas of Europe"

October 22, 1894 was a proud day for the prosperous German community centered around Bushwick and Ridgewood.  That’s when the cornerstone of the new German Hospital, on St. Nicholas Avenue between Stockholm and Stanhope Streets, was put down and John Hein gave a large donation to the project in his will.

“The project for the erection of a hospital has been under discussion by Brooklyn Germans for several years,” stated a celebratory New York Times article. “The various German clubs and singing societies throughout the city interested themselves in the matter, and finally enough money was raised.” Brooklyn dedicated its German Hospital, March 9, 2011

"The plan to erect a German hospital in Brooklyn originated with the Plattdeutsche Volksfext Verein as far back as 1896. This society boasts of the distinction of having the largest membership of any kindred organization. On October 27, 1886, it was resolved to build the institution. Accordingly twenty-seven lots in St. Nicholas-ave, and Stanhope and stockholm sts. were purchased for $10,000, and appeals for contributions met with liberal response on the part of the public. Soon, however, it became apparent that almost all of the contributors were low Germans.

Brooklyn Hospital News Jun 16, 1897--John Hein's Donation

"A special meeting was called on May 5 of the following year, and it was resolved to select ninety delegates to the Plattdeutsche Verein, who should form a new organization under the name of the German Hospital Society. It was announced that all Germans would have equal voice in the affairs of the organization, which was incorporated on September 27. The building lots and $59 were transferred to the new society by the Plattdeutsche Veren. A fair was held in the Clermont-ave. Rink in 1898, and netted $43,000. In December of the same year John Hein, who had given a large endowment to the German Hospital in Manhattan subscribed $35,000 to the fund of the Brooklyn enterprise."  New York Daily Tribune, Sunday, May 22, 1899
