Charles S. Martin

Charles Stanley Martin, son of A. C. and Hadassah Martin, was born in Stevenson county, Illinois, on Nov. 12, 1875*, and departed this life at his home near Humbird, Wisconsin, on July 2, 1946, at the age of 70 years, 7 months, and 20 days.

Charles was the second son in a family of seven children. He spent his boyhood in Stevenson county, and later went to Kansas, where he lived four years. In 1912 he moved to Fairchild vicinity.

In 1915, he was united in marriage with Miss Margaret Stuve, of Humbird. To this happy union were born eight children, all of whom are living. Their home was on a farm near Fairchild until 1926, when the family moved to Woodruff. This was their home for fourteen years. In 1940, they moved to the farm near Humbird, where death came to him quite suddenly at 10:45 on Tuesday morning of last week.

Mr. Martin was converted at an early age in the United Brethren church, of which he later became a member. He was a member of the Odd Fellows lodge, of Orangeville, Illinois.

The wife and eight children, Lyle, Eileen, Beryl, Raymond, Wallace, Rosemary, James, and David Robert, mourn the loss of the husband and father. He is also survived by one grandchild, four sisters, and one brother, besides other relatives. His passing away is also mourned by many neighbors and friends.

Funeral services were held at the Methodist church on Friday afternoon, July 5th, the pastor, Rev. E. J. Sachtjen officiating. The text of the sermon was a portion of the verse of I Samuel 20:3, "There is but a step between me and death." Mrs. Walter Smith and Mrs. Willard Waters sang, "The Old Rugged Cross" and "Rock of Ages," with Miss Edith Simons accompanist. The services were attended by a large number of relatives and friends. burial was in Mentor cemetery. Pallbearers were Elmer Duerkop, Paul Elger, Harold Morgan, Leo Printz, Michael Young, and Peter Fradenburg.

Relatives who came to attend the services were Earl and Estella Martin, Fairchild; Mrs. C. F. Schramm and Leola, Freeport, Ill.; Mr. and Mrs. Phil Winebrenner and son Ronny, Forreston, Ill.; Mrs. Viola Ferguson, Wis. Rapids; Earl Ferguson, Eau Claire; Mr. and Mrs. Howell Stuve, Paul and Phyllis, Owen; Mrs. K. L. Helwig, William and Beth, Superior.
