Oens, Edwin (18 MAY 1843 - 15 OCT 1924)

Edwin Oens, an honored Civil War Veteran, died at his home in Granton, Clark County, Wis., Oct. 25, 1924, aged 81 years and 5 months. He was born in Indiana May 18, 1843, coming to Richland Center, Wis., when a boy. At the age of 18 he joined the Union Army in 1861 and served four years and one month, coming home with an honorable discharge on the 8th day of November. He was married to Katharine Shanklan of Richland Center, Wis. During his early married life he followed the occupation of farming. Eleven children were born to this union, three dying in infancy and one girl at the age of twenty. In about 1905 he moved to Chili, living a quiet retried life for five years, when he purchased a farm in Washburn which he sold a year ago and moved to Granton, where he lived the remainder of his life.

He leaves to mourn his death his wife, four sons and three daughters, twenty-six grandchildren, and seventeen great-grandchildren.

The children are: Adelia, Mrs. Ellis Collins of Richland Center; George Oens of Granton; Dora, Mrs. Elwood Ewers of Richland Center; Fred Oens of Nekoosa, Wis.; Esther, Mrs. Douglas of Des Moines, Iowa; Frank Oens of Wilton, Wis.; and Harry Oens of Granton.

The funeral was held Oct. 17 in the Methodist Church in Chili. A company of American Legion boys attended the funeral and assisted in the ceremonies. The pallbearers were members of the Odd Fellow Lodge, of which he was a member.

Rev. Mallory officiated at the funeral. Those who attended from a distance were Robert Oens and wife and Sherman Oens of Rochester, Minn.; Mr. and Mrs. Lee Ewers of Richland Center; Mr. and Mrs. Elden Chittwood of Blue River; Mr. and Mrs. Chittwood of Blue River; Mr. and Mrs. John Russell of Lynxville and Mr. and Mrs. Silas Mann of Nekoosa.

The remains were laid to rest in the Yolo Cemetery. The great assemblage of relatives and friends in attendance, who came from far and near, testified to the esteem in which the deceased was held.
