Minor, Samuel R. (24 Apr 1840 - 5 Feb 1928)

S. R. Minor, for many years a resident of Neillsville, Clark County, Wis., died at St. Joseph's Hospital, Marshfield, Sunday evening at 7:30 o'clock, Feb. 5, 1928. Mr. Minor underwent an operation for strangulated hernia on Friday, but was unable to rally.

Samuel Richardson Minor was born in the Province of Quebec, Canada, April 24, 1840, and was in his 88th year when he died.

He frequently went down into the State of New York to work, when a young man, and there made the acquaintance of the Hewett family. He came to Clark County, Wis. about 1863 through his acquaintance of the Hewetts and the next year was married in Neillsville to Miss Susan Hewett. They continued to live here until her death in Sept. 1910. After her death he went to live with his daughters at Stratford and Auburndale. In 1913 he was married to Mrs. Sarah Steele, a sweetheart of his boyhood days, living at Chrisman, Ill. He took up his residence there until his wife died three years ago, when he returned to live again with his daughters.

Mr. Minor was an excellent carpenter and followed that work in the days that Neillsville was first building up and later on some of the finer residences, being one of the workmen that built the Cornelius residence and other fine homes here. In the lumber days he worked in camp, building and repairing logging sleighs and other work for James Hewett, and also worked on the river in the spring. He was a man of calm temperament, friendly and peaceful in manner, but a man of powerful physique, being counted as one of the strongest men on Black River in early days. Until his last illness it is said that he never saw a sick day, and his tall, erect form gave him the appearance of being much younger than he was as old age came upon him.

He is survived by three daughters, Mrs. Ida Van Ryzin and Mrs. Mildred Theobald of Stratford, and Mrs. Gertrude News of Auburndale, also eight grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. His brothers and sisters all preceded him in death, he being the last of ten children.

The remains were brought here for burial, and the funeral will be held this Wednesday afternoon at 1:30 o'clock at Lowe's Funeral Home, Rev. G. W. Longenecker officiating.
