Steltenpohl, Elmer Leonard David (10 September 1927 – 1 April 2022)

Elmer Leonard David Steltenpohl, age 94, of Marshfield, passed away at his home on Friday, April 1, 2022, surrounded by his family.

Elmer was born in Nasonville, Wisconsin on September 10, 1927, the son of the late William and Rose (Duchow) Steltenpohl. Elmer grew up in the Chili area working on the family farm.

In February on 1946, Elmer joined the military receiving his basic training at Aberdeen, Maryland where he attended a welding school and graduated as an honor student. He was later stationed in Japan during World War II where he dismantled submarines and demilitarized other war materials.

After his return from the military, Elmer met and married Elizabeth Jean “Betty” Whipple on December 7, 1949, in Pine City, Minnesota. Following their marriage, they resided in Chili, where they owned a farm, and Elmer worked for a carpenter crew in Chili and was a Sawyer at Roehl Sawmill Company.

In 1958 the Steltenpohl’s moved to Neillsville where they owned and operated Steltenpohl’s Welding and Repair Business, and in 1969 a logging business.

In 1975, Elmer and Betty purchased the Edge of Town Drive-In in Greenwood, which they operated until their retirement in 1982. Upon retiring, they moved to the Christie area where Elmer had built their home. Unfortunately, Betty Jean passed away on December 30, 2001, at the Marshfield Hospital.

After a short time, Elmer met Florence Mundt, his special friend until her death in December of 2017.

Elmer had several hobbies throughout his lifetime including fishing, hunting, wood carving, showed and raced coon dogs, and had an interest in family genealogy.

Elmer is survived by his sons, Denis (Debra) Steltenpohl, Jerold (Diane) Steltenpohl, daughter Judy (Greg) Pezzullo, son-in-law, David Marty, grandchildren, Jason (Lea) Steltenpohl, Amy (Tim) Handel, Jason Steltenpohl, Gregory (Heather) Steltenpohl, Alanna (Todd) Weichelt, his great-grandchildren, Seth, Tanner, Brianna, Gage, Morgan, Bayley (Nolan) and Hayden. Elmer has one great-great- grandchild, Colton Dalton Quest. He is also survived by a sister, Charlot (Jack) Campton, a sister-in-law, Norma Steltenpohl, and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Elmer was preceded in death by his parents, a daughter Debra Marty, his sisters Fern and Vera, and his brothers, Harold, James and Fritz.

Graveside services will be held at Hillside Cemetery in Marshfield, on Saturday, April 23, 2022, at 12:00 p.m. with Reverend Mark Krueger officiating.
