Hohenstein, Fred Sr. (7 JUN 1850 - 16 Jan 1929)

Fred Hohenstein Sr., one of Neillsville, Clark County, Wisconsin's oldest and most respected citizens, passed away on to the higher life at the home of his son Fred Hohenstein Jr., on Wednesday afternoon, Jan. 16, 1929. He had reached the age of 78 years, 7 months and 9 days.

Fred Hohenstein was born in Barleben, Germany on June 7, 1850. He attended the home schools and grew to manhood in the land of his birth. At the age of 21 years, in the year 1871, he was married to Miss Elizabeth Withoft at Madborg, Germany. Ten years later, in 1881, Mr. and Mrs. Hohenstein came to America and settled at Utica, Ill., where they made their home until the summer of 1894, when they came to Clark County, Wis., and settled on a farm in the town of Washburn. After farming for 14 years, the Hohenstein family moved to Neillsville in the year of 1908, where they continued to make their home since. After living for a time on East Sixth St., they purchased a home on South Oak St., where they lived until a year ago.

Mr. Hohenstein was a market gardener, and for many year furnished the grocery stores and housewives of Neillsville with fruit and vegetables during the entire summer season. Finding that he was becoming too old to continue with the regular work, he moved with his wife to the home of his son, Fred Jr., on Grand Ave., about a year ago. Mrs. Hohenstein died April 27, 1928.

Mr. Hohenstein is survived by eight children, 30 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. His sons and daughters are: Etta, Mrs. A. Patterson of Stockton, Calif.; Rudolph of Myrtle Creek, Oregon; Fred Jr. of Neillsville; Elizabeth, Mrs. R. Frantz of Neillsville; William of Sultan, Wash.; Annie, Mrs. Charles Franklin of Rockford, Ill.; Peter of Washburn township, Clark Co.; and Irene, Mrs. Henry Wallace of Neillsville.

The funeral was held Monday afternoon at the Fred Hohenstein Jr. home, P. S. Temby reading the Christian Science service.

Mrs. C. M. Franklin of Rockford, Ill., was here to attend the funeral.
