Krause, William (21 Apr 1856 - 6 Jul 1929)

Mr. William Krause died at the office of Dr. Neis on Saturday, July 6th, 1929, of heart failure. Accompanied by his son Charles, he had come to consult the doctor, but was stricken upon his arrival there. Mr. Krause was born in the Province of Pommerania, Germany, on the 21st day of April, 1856, reaching the age of 73 years, 2 months and 15 days. At about the age of 9 years he came to this country with his parents, who at first settled near Watertown, Wis., later however, moving to a farm near Fort Atkinson, Wis. Here on the 12th day of August 1880, he was united in marriage to Miss Bertha Pluatz. They Resided on his father's farm until 1893 when they moved to a farm in Johnstown, Rock County, Wis. In 1903 they came to a farm near Thorp, Clark County, Wis. and lived there until 1918 when they retired, moving to the village of Thorp, where in 1923 his wife preceded him in death. Six children were born to this union, two of them preceding the parents in death, namely Paul at the age of 27 and Mrs. Elsie Barth at the age of 31. Four children remain to mourn their loss: Charles and Wm. H. of Thorp, Fred and Mrs. Ida Darge of Fort Atkinson, also 8 grandchildren, Ralph, Raymond and Eunice Darge, Wm. Krause, Sylvia Krause, Bernice Barth and Timothy and Frederick Krause.

To his last day he was an active worker in the Evangelical Lutheran Church and helped to build the church at Reseburg, of which congregation he was president for 24 years. He was also President of the Citizens Cooperative Milling Co. of Thorp, and Vice-President of the Farmers Exchange Bank, spending his last years in working for the welfare of these enterprises.

The funeral was held from the home of Wm. H. Krause (which was his former home) on Monday, July 8 at 9:00 o'clock and from St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church at Reseburg at 10:00 o'clock, Rev. Theo. Laesch officiating. The remains were then taken to Fort Atkinson where funeral services were held on Tuesday, July 9, Rev. Palmer Jahnke officiated. Interment followed on the family lot at Fort Atkinson.
