Roehl Family, Leo

Leo C. Roehl, owner of a dairy farm of 120 acres in Section 16, Fremont Township, Clark County, Wis., has been a resident of Fremont Township since 1922. He was born in Clark County August 9, 1922, on a small farm near Chili, Wis., son of Herman and Clara Ackerman Roehl. His paternal grandparents, Carl and Justine Roehl, came from Germany about 1880. His maternal grandparents, Ed and Emma Ackerman, came from Sheboygan, and in 1919 moved out west. Leo's mother's sister and husband, Mr. and Mrs. Alvin Pischer, were his sponsors in 1926. He grew up on a small farm with his six brothers, Glenn, Alvin, Russell, Harvey, Walter, and Carl, as well as his three sisters, Vera, Lila, and Evelyn.

Leo finished his elementary education in 1937 at the Cozy Corner School District No. 8, Fremont Township; and attended the new Granton High School; he graduated in 1941. Leo's dad passed away in the summer of 1943, leaving the forty to his wife and children to work, so Leo farmed with his mother, and hauled milk for Greunke's Cheese Factory for a few years.

The year 1947 saw him make an independent start in life! On April 19 that year he was married to Verna Grobe, who was born in Clark County, Fremont Township, Feb. 5, 1928, daughter of Edwin and Adelia Lustig Grobe of Clark County. Leo and Verna bought their farm from Joe Reichert in 1948, farming with horses the first few years.

Leo worked off the farm at times, at one time he drove slab truck for his brother Glenn who owned a sawmill in Chili. He delivered slabwood to many families who burned wood for fuel.

In the early summer of 1958, he drove truck for Marshfield Canning Co., hauling pea vines to the factory. Mexicans loaded his loads of peas. This was seasonal work.

With his farm improving from year to year, he had now built a new milk house and garage on his place. With the help of his wife, who helped with the farm work, he was able to take on a full time job, driving truck for C. W. Transport, delivering freight to the stores in Marshfield, which he has been doing for the past fifteen years.

They have three children, Elroy, Darrel and Cheryl. Elroy works on his father's farm helping with the work. Cheryl and Darrel are in their first year of high school.

Verna and Leo celebrated their Silver Wedding in 1972 with an open house in the church basement. They are active members of Christ Lutheran Church in Chili. Mrs. Roehl is an active member of the goldenrod Homemakers Club, Lutheran Ladies Aid, and Lutheran Women's Missionary League.
