Donald E. Smith, 80, Loyal, died Friday, Sept. 10, 2004, at his home. Funeral services were held at 11 a.m., Tuesday, Sept. 14, at Trinity Lutheran Church, Loyal. The Rev. Daniel Zimmerman officiated. Burial was in South Green Grove Cemetery. Pallbearers were his grandsons, David Croston, Sam McNeely, Adam Smith, Amos Smith, Try Smith and Justin Smith.

Donald Eugene Smith was born Sept. 1, 1924, in the town of Beaver, to David and Vera [nee Garvin] Smith. He was raised on the family farm, educated at Sunnyside country school and graduated from Loyal High School in 1942. He married Dorothy Schuette on April 10, 1948, at St. Paul’s Lutheran parsonage. They farmed in the town of Beaver until retiring in 1980. After retiring, he spent much of his time dancing, fishing, traveling, woodworking and helping his children. He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, a member of the Marshfield Badger Eagles Aerie #624, a charter member of the Loyal FFA, served on the school board for Sunnyside school, and served on the Loyal Volunteer Fire Department for 30 years.

Survivors include his wife, Dorothy, Loyal; six children, Neil [Nancy] Smith, Mosinee, Lynn [Theresa] Smith, Loyal, Lee [Mary] Smith, Spencer, DeAnn [Glen] Luepke, Spencer, Dean [Connie] Smith, Spencer, and Juleen [Dave] Kunze, Stratford; 22 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; one brother; and two sisters.
