Huckstead, Ellen M. (2 April 1895 - 28 Jan. 1932)

The death of Mrs. Harold Huckstead Thursday morning, January 28, came as a blow to her many relatives and friends in this community. She died at Sacred Heart Hospital, Eau Claire, where she had been taken January 11 in a serious condition and little hopes were held for her recovery. The doctors having diagnosed her case as sleeping sickness.

Ellen M. Raine was born April 2, 1895 in Meeker’s Grove, La Fayette County, Wisconsin the second daughter to Mr. and Mrs. John Raine. At the age of 9 yeas she came to Clark County with her parents and settled on the Austin farm on the Ridge. Here she grew to womanhood, having received her education at the Reed school and Neillsville high school. On October 31, 1917, she was married to Harold Huckstead. This marriage was the culmination of school day romance and the young couple took up their new life on the Reed farm, the ancestral home of Mr. Huckstead’s grandparents. To this marriage, two children were born, a son, Lowell, and a daughter, Ardith.

Unusually gifted in the art of homemaking, Mrs. Huckstead’s home soon became a center of social and church activities in her neighborhood. She was deeply interested in welfare work and gave liberally of her time and strength to promote those activities which stood for the best interests of the community. She had great love for flowers and many a home has been cheered by bouquets from her garden. She was a tireless church worker and at the time of her death was president of the Pleasant Ridge Ladies Aid of the M. E. Church, an office she had held for several years. She was also a member of the Granton Homemaker’s Club where by her willingness and kindness many a home was gladdened by her help.

Besides her husband and her children, she is survived by her widowed mother, Mrs. John Raine, three brothers, Everett, Fred and Clyde and two sisters, Maude, Mrs. Ernest Brown, and Ruby, Mrs. Harold Shedden, all of this community.

As a daughter and sister she was kind and thoughtful, as a wife a helpful, loving companion, as a mother, tender and adoring and as a friend steadfast and true.

The world will move on, but the influence of this noble woman will live through the years and men and women will be the better for having known her.

The funeral was held Sunday afternoon from the home and at the Methodist-Presbyterian church in Neillsville, Rev. S. J. Lambright of Kilbourn, former pastor here officiating, Rev. Paul White, present pastor being quarantined at the parsonage.

Those from away attending the funeral were Orville Webster, Platteville; Mr. and Mrs. Thos. Lindsey, Cuba City; Marion Benedict, Wauwatosa; Arthur Benedict, Fond du Lac; Judge Frank Johnson, Black River Falls.
