Happe, Bertha (1 Dec. 1874 - 11 Feb. 1932)

Bertha Happe, nee *Grug, Daughter of August and Christine Krug, was born in the town of Lomira, Dodge County, Wisconsin, Dec. 1, 1874. When she was about seven years of age the family moved to Kekoshkee; where she grew to womanhood. Reared in a Christian home, she early was led to the knowledge of the Truth and became a Christian, and while in her youth she became affiliated with the church.

Sept. 1, 1898 she was united in marriage to C. A. Happe, afterward residing a few years at Knowls, Wis., from where they moved to a farm near Chili, and several years later purchased a modest home in the village of Chili. To them was born one daughter, now Mrs. Irvin Bandt. At Chili, Mrs. Happe joined the Evangelical church and has since been a faithful worker in the Evangelical Ladies Aid and a member of the Sunday School.

The departed enjoyed a fair degree of health up to the late years of her life. For several years her health was impaired at times, but with medical aid she would recover to continue her daily activities. In her home in the village she had hoped to spend the future years, however, this hope was not to be realized for long. Less than a year ago she began to fail again, and despite all that medical science was able to do, and the kind and loving ministry of her dear ones, her condition grew worse. During the past weeks she has suffered intensely, which was relieved when her summons come from her Heavenly Father, on Last Thursday afternoon, Feb. 11, 1932. Her suffering was borne with a fine example of Christen faith in her Lord, which gave her much comfort, though suffering, and now she has gone to sleep and resting "in the arms of Jesus."

She leaves a sorrowing husband, one daughter, two sisters, two brothers, two grandchildren, one step-daughter and two step-sons. The grace of God comforts those "who sorrow now, but not as such who have no hope."

The funeral service was held from the late home at 1:45 p.m. and from the Immanuel Evangelical church in Chili at 2 p.m., Sunday, Feb. 14, by the pastor, Rev. G. W. Zimmerman.

A mixed quartet consisting of Mrs. F. L. Schilling, Mrs. W. G. Lindow, Henry Nebel and Otto Drescher with Miss Iva Zimmerman accompanying, sang. The pall bearers were Luther Lindow, Edward Ott, John Lindow, August Lindow, Nebe? and E. W. Lee.

Those who attended the funeral from away were Ted Krug, Wauwatosa; Mr. and Mrs. Ewald Arndt, Milwaukee; Mr. and Mrs. C. G. Happe, Osseo; Rev. and Mrs. August Happe, Milwaukee; Mr. and Mrs. Alfred Fischer and daughter, Gertrude, Dorchester; Mrs. Deahn, Stratford; Lee Pemperian, Stratford and Fred Pemperian, Marshfield.
