Vilas was born Sept. 30, 1927, in Wausau to Charles and Norma (Miller) Roewe. He attended Sandhill Grade School and graduated from Colby High School. Vilas and Ardis Bublitz were married on Nov. 7, 1970, in Mauston. She died on March 2, 1990. He farmed in the town of Colby from 1945 until he retired in 1993. Vilas collected antique tools and re-created pieces off farm equipment into metal sculptures. He enjoyed the company of his neighbors at the Recycling Center and did what he could to help by watching for things that others might find a good use for. Vilas was honest and frank about matters, which endeared him to many.

Vilas Roewe was a loving father, husband, grandfather, father-in-law, uncle, cousin, friend and neighbor who will be dearly missed. Vilas was a genuine, caring, simple man who loved his only son, Keith, dearly and told all who would listen how proud he was of him. The joy of his life was Anna, his granddaughter. He adored "his little Anna" and cherished her love for him. He has been reunited with his wife Ardis, the love of his life whom he has missed for 14 years. He was a member of First Presbyterian Church, where he served as an Elder, Deacon Member and Clerk of Session.

Vilas is survived by his son, Keith (Joann) Roewe of Colby, and his granddaughter, Anna Roewe.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife, Ardis.
