Wilcox, April 4, 1894

You can teach a bear, hunt a tiger and kill a lion, but a lie evades the skill of the huntsman. Wonder where Cy Stockwell is, who was going to start up the lodge. Come Cy, get a move on you, for that is just what we want. Salina, did you kill that snake? H.L. Snyder is improving the looks of his place somewhat by building a granery. Buy when others must sell, and sell when others must buy, and purchase only what which you can pay for, is a true old maxim. George, why didn't you fly that kite? The Weekly Wisconsin came to us last week enlarged from a 6 to a 7 column paper. Nature has again assumed her verdant hue. Balmy breezes blow from southern climes, the birds carol in the trees and the festive granger goes forth to scatter the seeds on the bosom of the earth for the harvest, tra la. Unarm - the long day's task is done. Geo. Lindsley wears a smiling face when handing out mail. That's right Geo., we like to see a smiling P.M. Several of our young men intend to go north this spring to work in the bark woods. Chauncey, get out your bicycle, roads are fair. John Vandeberg came out on our streets the other day with a great big grin. We like to see people look happy John. Al Turner seems to attend church quite regular of late. That's right, Al. F.W. Dawes, of Granton, made our burg a call on Wednesday. Homer King went after rat poison the other day, says he'll fix "em" plenty. Ben Hickey returned home a few days ago from Withee where he has been at work. Addie Lawrence is the possessor of a roller organ and she says all you have to do to make music is to turn the crank. The exhibition the other evening was a grand success. The house was crowded full. The program was well rendered and was a credit to both teacher and scholars. L.J. Fulwiler took in the sights at Chili, Wednesday. J. Fisher and L. Mack are comtemplating going to Nebraska soon. S.W. Bolton took in the association at Loyal last Wednesday. Among those that attended examination at Neillsville last week, were Frank Snyder, Chauncey Fowler, Maud Humiston, Mabel Gibson, Sadie Graves and Lillie Warner. Mrs. H.S. Chase and remaining family started for their new home in _______. A pleasant surprise was given to Johnny Pietenpol and wife last Friday. E.M. Rowe is selling his horses like hot cakes. A.S. Tucker went to Marshfield on business Saturday last. Abie Turner has strong attractions at the P.O. Shall we say any more Hattie. About 45 invited guests assembled at the home of Miss Effie Gibson Saturday eve, in honor of her 16th birthday anniversary. The guests were handsomely entertained, and the time was spent in playing games, social and private chat and instrumental music. She received many beautiful presents and that she May live to enjoy many more such occasions is the wish of all her friends. Francis Palmer transacted business at Granton Saturday. We are sorry to learn that Geo. Vick met with an accident some time ago. It seems that in the act of rolling logs, the swamp hook lost its hold and struck him tearing the flesh from the hip down to the knee. A.W. Hales went to Chili Monday on business. Miss Bertha Bruce died at her home last Sunday, at 8:30 A.M. after a long and lingering illness and was buried in the Windfall cemetery Monday afternoon, Rev. Sweet officiating. To the bereaved parents and friends we extend our heartfelt sympathy. P. Campbell and W. Fulwiler took in the sights at Loyal Monday afternoon. E.M. Rowe, wife and daughters of Granton called on friends and relatives Sunday. Alex. Holverson was seen on our streets last Saturday. Wonder who he is looking for. Mrs. Ella Snyder and son, Loren, were seen in our midst Monday. Considerable consternation was caused among our people on account of the new road law. Les. Mack went to Loyal Friday to officiate as horse doctor. He is a professional in that line and understands the business thoroughly. House cleaning is all the fashion among the women now days. Miss Blanche Cross has returned from Chicago a well person. Eddie Tucker is a frequent visitor at the Center now days. Wonder who he is struck on. It is said that Al Turner is about the only man in York that can create any excitement on election day. Is that so Al? Ed Ackerman has a little girl very sick with lung fever. How do you like suprise parties Walter, or how does the one we had last evening strike you? March came in like a lamb and went out like a lion.
