Reitt, Andrew (? - 27 JUN 1901)

Andrew Reitt, an engineer, was instantly killed by a log last Thursday afternoon, while loading logs near Washburn.

The engine which he operated was in a pit and heavy rains of last week made it impossible to use it so a crew of men were set to work to dig a ditch to drain the water off. Mr. Reitt was in the crew, but could not stand the intense heat, and was put to loading cedar poles or logs with another man. They had loaded two cars and were placing the last log on the third car when Mr. Reitt, who was on the load, tried to swing it with his foot. This three him backward off the load and he struck a stump. The pole fell and followed, striking him on the left side of the breast and pinned him to the stump. His fellow workman, a large strong Swede, rushed to him, lifted the pole away and felt for Mr. Reitt's pulse, but found life extinct. The body was sent to Phillips Friday where it was embalmed, Saturday noon it was forwarded here (Dorchester, Clark County, Wis.) and place in H. LaBossier's hall until the midnight train, when he and his family departed for Butler, Pa., his former home, where the services and burial will take place.

Mrs. Lizzie Reitt is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Herman Schroeder and live about two and one-half miles east of here.

Mr. Reitt was married here about twelve years ago. Soon after his marriage they moved to Pennsylvania where they resided until last fall, when they located at Phillips and he went to Washburn to work.

He leaves a wife and five children, the oldest being 11, to mourn his sudden death.
