Eldon Lee Smith, 73, Arkansas City, Kan., died Friday, Aug, 26, 2005, at his residence. Funeral services were held at 2 p.m., Tuesday, Aug. 30, at the First United Methodist Church, Arkansas City. The Rev. Jerry Hooley officiated.

Eldon Lee Smith was born June 9, 1932, in the town of Eaton, near Loyal, to Vernon James and Louise Iva (nee Millard) Smith. He graduated from Loyal High School in 1951, and attended barber school in Eau Claire, until being drafted into the United States Air Force. He served in the Air Force from 1951 to 1955. He was a legal specialist serving one year in Korea. He married Mae Belle Ramsey on Nov. 21, 1954, at McConnell Air Force Base Chapel, Wichita, Kan. The couple made their home in Amarillo, Texas, until moving to Eau Claire. He began working for Retail Credit and moved to Arkansas City in 1965. He finished barber school and began work as a barber in Arkansas City for 30 years as owner of Eldon’s Barber Shop. He was a lifelong member of the First Methodist Church, life member of the V.F.W. and the American Legion, member of the Crescent Lodge #133 A. F. and A. M. and the Scottish Rite in Wichita.

Survivors include his wife, May Belle Smith, Arkansas City; one daughter, Karen (Doug) Comeau, Benicia, Calif.; one son, Keith (Charlotte) Smith, South Haven; his mother, Louise Smith, Colby; two brothers, Vernon A. "Bud" (Joan) Smith, Loyal, and Arnold Smith, Kan. City, Mo.; one sister, Virginia (Edward) Brown, Colby; grandchildren, Janel Comeau, Stephen Comeau, Diana Locke, Garratt Locke, Bryan Smith, Crystal Smith, and Ryan Smity; two great-grandchildren, Madison Smith and Tucker Locke.

Preceding him in death were his daughter, Deborah B. Smith; his father, J. Vernon Smith; and his brother, Ronald K. Smith.

Memorials have been established with the Deborah B. Smith Scholarship Fund at Crowley College of Harry Hynes Hospice. Contributions May be made through the funeral home at Rindt-Erdman Funeral Home, P.O. Box 756, Arkansas City, KS 67005.
