Graves, C. S. (1 Dec 1856 - 12 Mar 1915)

On Friday morning, March 12, 1915, at St. Anthony Hospital in Denver, Col., Mr. C. S. Graves, who for the past eight years has resided near Arriba, passed away to eternity. His last sickness, which finally culminated in his death, lasted for about ten weeks, during which time his suffering was intense. On Wednesday, previous to his death, his family in the hope of gaining for him some relief, decided to take him to Denver. But there his suffering was no less and in the early morning of March 12, death finally released him from his suffering.

Few men have had a wider experience than Mr. Graves. He was born Dec. 1, 1856 at Palmyra, Wis., and married Emma Boyden at Footville, Wis., Dec. 3, 1882. He was station agent for the Chicago and Northwestern at Footville, for ten or twelve years. In 1890 he engaged in the Life Insurance business for the Northwester of Milwaukee. In this connection, a letter from this company to Mr. Graves in 1910, gives him the honor of having written the greatest number of policies ever written by an agent of the company in a single year.

For a number of years he was immigration agent for the Northwestern. Later he platted the town of Columbia, Wis. at which place he ran a general store and was Post Master. In 1905 he came to Colorado, where he has resided since.

He leaves to mourn his death, his daughter Mrs. Ashton, and son C. E. Graves, besides two brothers who still survive him in the east.

Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon, conducted by Rev. Marquardt and interment was made in the New Arriba Cemetery. (Arriba Record, Colorado)
