Vine, Mary J. (16 JUN 1843 - 9 Apr 1921)

Mrs. Fred Vine, Sr., died at Marshfield Hospital April 9, 1921. She was taken sick at her home in Crandon a few weeks ago and was brought to Marshfield for care and medical attention.

Mary Jane Buss was born in Buffalo, N.Y., June 16, 1843. Her girlhood days were spent in Buffalo, and she was married there to Fred J. Vine Jan. 7, 1864, coming to Clark County, Wis. the same fall, settling on a homestead in the town of Grant, which was their home till 1893. Mr. Vine, being appointed Superintendent of Indian Farming, they moved to Succor Point Reservation, Minn. Two years later they moved to Lac du Flanbeau Reservation, Wis. In 1902 they went to Crandon, which has been their home since Mr. Vine died in Feb. 1917.

Mrs. Vine was a woman of the fine pioneer class that met bravely the tasks of a new community. In those days much depended on courage, energy and mutual helpfulness, not only in the home, but also in neighborhood interests. Mrs. Vine was equal to all these tasks. A good wife and mother, looking well to the needs of her home, but always ready to help other when needed. She is survived by three sisters, Mrs. Sarah Selves of Pleasant Ridge; Mrs. Phebe Hutchinson of Humboldt, Iowa; Mrs. Maria Brown of Buffalo, N.Y., one brother, Joseph Buss of Pleasant Ridge; seven children: Arthur and Mrs. Ettie Carter of Crandon; Mrs. Edna Major of Scottville, Mich., Fred, Frank, George and Mrs. Arlo Huckstead of Pleasant Ridge. Also 20 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held in the Ridge Church April 12, Rev. W.T. Scott officiating. A number of Eastern Star ladies, of which order deceased was a member, were in attendance. Burial took place in Pleasant Ridge Cemetery beside her husband.
