Grap, Sam and Kay (19 Sep 1963)

Sam and Kay Grap Featured in the Greenwood Gleaner by Janet Fauser Sept. 19, 1963

Kay's parents were both from Europe. They moved from her birthplace, Calumet, Michigan, when she was barely six weeks old. They settled on a farm in the Willard area in 1914 where Kay was raised. She later moved to Chicago and lived there for 15 years. She returned to the Greenwood area, because she prefers a small town, in which the people are much friendlier.

Sam and Kay were "friends" for about 7 years after they first met at a shower above the Globe Store.

Sam was born and raised in the Neillsville area by a European father and mother who was also of the Neillsville area. They were married one week before Pearl Harbor was bombed and about a year later, Sam went into the service for 35 months.

They have one daughter, Ana Maria.

Kay started her working days by picking potato bugs and Sam started by picking up rock on his father's farm.

Sam and Kay owned the Greenwood Cafe from 1949 to 1955. They then sold it, but returned again in 1962. They both like restaurant work, although it's a lot of work. They especially enjoy people, especially their customers, but prefer to think of them as their friends. Kay says their business works our very well--Kay runs the restaurant and Sam runs Kay

The most important thing that Kay feels she has accomplished is keeping her little family happy, because it's not the business or name we make for our self that really counts. Both Sam and Kay feel raising Ana Maria is their most important job.

Sam is a construction worker as well as a waiter in his restaurant. Both he and Kay benefit our community, not only as a well working team, but as members of various clubs. Sam is a member of the American Legion and Kay belongs to the Auxiliary.
