WINN FAMILY

(By Glyde Graves Steinich and published in "The Centennial History of the York Center United Methodist Church, 1880-1980 and the Town of York, 1857-1980, pg. 26-27)

My grandfather, Simeon Winn and his bride Martha drove up from Taycheeda with an ox team and sleigh leading a cow behind them. My great-grandmother used to keep the tollgate at Taycheda and many the wild Indian tales my grandmother used to tell us as we sat around that big round heater. My grandfather purchased 40 acres at $1 an acre. During the time it took to erect a log cabin they stayed with the Charles Campbell family, relatives of the Winns. I can remember that at one time there was a woods back of the church in which picnics were held on the Fourth of July. My father, Edward Graves, married Jennie Winn in 1899. Both were very acti've in church activities. One activity for the young people was the "Good Templar Lodge". Mrs. Walter Graves was the leader.

Pictured below is, the Winn Family cabin. Martha Winn (seated), Guy with horses, hired girl and hired man.
