Cook, Morton (28 JAN 1864 - 27 Sep 1919)

Morton Metcalf Cook was born at Springfield, Ohio, Jan. 28, 1864, moved with his parents to Neillsville, Clark County, Wis. at the age of three years, and settled in the town of Hewett. There he grew to manhood and for several years worked in the lumber camps and saw mills throughout this section of the country. He was married to Sarah Cox of Greenwood March 27, 1889, living about a year in his hometown and then moving to Greenwood, where he resided several years. Later he moved to Fifield, where he has worked for the Paterson Bros. Lumber Co. for 13 years, several years of that time being night watch at the mill, which he was doing at the time of his death, which occurred at his home Sept. 27, 1919, being stricken with heart disease while dressing himself to go to his work that evening. Fifteen or sixteen years ago he took a small child to raise by the name of Violet Stoneburg, after the death of her mother, and Mrs. Cook being her aunt, made the child doubly dear to him. He has given her a good education in school and music and she is teaching and boarding at home. He has been a Modern Woodman for 18 years. The funeral was held Wednesday, Oct. 1 at Neillsville, from the Congregational Church, Rev. Arthur Dudley and Rev. Longenecker performing the last sad rites. His wife and niece, Violet Stoneburg, also three sisters and four brothers survive him. He was laid to rest beside his father and mother in the Neillsville Cemetery.
