Vangsness, Eda O. (13 Sep 1885 - 11 OCT 1909)

One of the saddest and most deplorable accident that has ever occurred in the history of the village (Thorp, Clark County, Wis.) took place at about 7:30 o'clock on Monday morning last. Mrs. Ole C. Vangsness, who had been paying her sisters, the Misses Buehlman, a ten-day visit here, was on her way to the depot to take the train for her home at Polley. As she reached the crossing between the Courier office and E. L. Snyder's store, the engine of the incoming train struck here, throwing her about sixty feet, but clear of the track. She was immediately picked up and carried to the residence of George Burke, where, after a period of about fifteen minutes she died. Deceased was nearsighted, having worn glasses for several years, and evidently, in her anxiety to reach the depot in time to take the train, did not realize that the engine was almost upon her when she stepped between the rails to cross the track.

Eda Odelia Buehlman was born at New London, Wis., on Sept. 13, 1885, her father later moving to Loyal, Dorchester, and some ten years ago to this village. Her mother died at New London on Sept. 9, 1891. After graduating from the Thorp High School she taught school for several years, including two years in the lower grades of the village schools. On June 24 of the present year she was united in marriage with Ole C. Vangsness, and has since resided at Polley.

She leaves her husband, Ole C. Vangsness, father, Christian Buehlman, and six sisters, Mrs. Nellie Allen of Redfield, S. D., Mrs. Philomene Uelman of Three Forks, Mont., Mrs. Paul Milkowski of Park Fall, Wis., and Misses Clara, Anna and Martha, and one brother, Clarence Buehlman of this village, those from a distance all arrived here to attend the funeral.

The funeral will be held from St. Bernard's Church this morning, Father Arentz officiating, interment taking place in the Catholic Cemetery.
