Vera Hales-Granton Honored Grandparent (1984)

Vera Hales of Granton was named the winner in a contest held this past month to select the Grandparent-Of-The-Year in the Granton area. The contest was sponsored by the Granton FFA Alumni.

Verla was nominated by Renee Paun who calls Mrs. Hales her adopted grandparent.

Sunday, September 9, is the sixth National Grandparents Day and this is also the day of the Granton Fall Festival parade. Verla and Renee will ride in the parade as honored guests.

Renee submitted an essay on why she wanted Mrs. Hales selected as being someone special in her life. She said, “She is a special person because ever since I was three weeks old, she took care of me, loved me, and helped raise me through the ‘important years of my life.’ She showed me how to bake and she sat with me for hours when I was in the hospital. You always see her bringing food to a special event, unasked, spending time with someone who is ill, or just babysitting with children who often call her ‘Grandma,’ she deserves to be honored.”

Verla was born on December 16, 1900, in the Town of York to Walter and Sadie Rowe. She had one brother, Milford. She attended Merry Vale School and then went to the Granton High School for 2 ½ years.

She remembers walking the four miles to high school until the last year when she and her brother rode in a horse and cutter in the winter. They tied their horse in the barn just north of the school. She had to quit school to help at home when illness occurred in the family.

She married Edward Dahl in 1923 and they had two children, Hazel, now of Clintonville, and Alvin, now of Loyal. She has five grandchildren.

In 1954, she married Loren Hales. Today she is a widow, and she has lived in the village of Granton for the past 20 years.

She has been active in the United Methodist Church and a member of its Women’s Society. She also belongs to the Romadka Homemakers and the Senior Citizens. Her hobbies ae embroidery and tatting, and she loves to make quilts and has made one for each of her granddaughters and step-granddaughters. During the summer you will find her out in her flower garden; she always carried a bouquet to church on Sunday.

Bad Days Recalled

The worst thing in life that she has experienced was when she was 10 years old, and her father had his four fingers cut off in the silo filler. Dr. Hausle of Granton came to the farm, laid her father on the kitchen table, put him to sleep and proceeded to operate. Her father made daily trips (by horse) to Granton to have the dressing changed.

Another experience she will never forget is when she was 15 and the family got scarlet fever. They were quarantined for 14 days. After that the whole house was fumigated with formaldehyde. Vera had three-foot braids back then; they made her sit at the foot of the stairs with her hair locked in a stairway so it could be fumigated. Her grandfather, William Rowe, was the health officer and was very strict with rules.

She enjoys good health and is active in her home and community. She writes dozen of letters each month to friends. You often see her at the Memorial Home visiting friends.

She always has a full cookie jar to treat children and is known for making some of the best homemade rolls in the area.
