MARY KAPFER

Mary E. Kapfer, age 86, of rural Thorp, died Friday, October 11, 2002 at her residence in the Town of Mead. Mary Evelyn Stafen was born on April 6, 1916 in Chicago, Illinois the daughter of Gustav and Paulina [Bosko] Stafen. She attended school in the Chicago area and then worked as a welder for the Schwinn Bicycle Factory until 1942. On May 19, 1934, Mary and Erich Karl Kapfer were united in marriage at St. Philomena Catholic Church in Chicago. The couple resided in Chicago until August 1946 when they moved to their farm near Thorp [Town of Mead]. Mary’s husband Erich died on April 19, 1974. Following his death Mary worked as an in-home care giver for many families in the Eau Claire, Thorp, Stanley and Boyd areas. Mary was a great mother and grandmother and always put everyone’s needs before her own. She greatly enjoyed dancing, singing, crocheting and needlepoint. In her early days, she was a great gardener and canner. Mary was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church in Willard and a past member of their choir. Mary had a great faith in God. She will be sadly missed by her children: Marianne [Bernard] Mertens of Thorp, Pauline [David] Haas of Thorp, Erika [Darwin] Mason of Stanley and Erich [Kathy Osowski] Kapfer of Thorp; her 24 grandchildren, 58 great grandchildren, 2 great great grandchildren; one sister-in-law: Mary Stafen of Chicago, Illinois and her constant, faithful companion, her dog Cocoa. She was preceded in death by her husband, two grandsons: Erich Kapfer II and Bernard Mertens, Jr. and two great grandchildren, 3 sisters and 6 brothers. Funeral services were held on Tuesday, October 15, 2002, 10:30 a.m. at Holy Family Catholic Church, in Willard, Father Joseph Follmar officiated and burial was in St. Bernard’s Cemetery in Thorp. Pallbearers were: Erich Kapfer III, Steven Haas, Mike Mason, Roger Mason, Allen Mason and Tom Mertens. Visitation was on Monday, October 14, 2002 from 4:00-8:00 p.m. at Thorp Funeral Home and again at church on Tuesday, October 15, 2002 from 9:30 a.m. until time of services. There was a rosary service at 7:30 p.m. on Monday evening at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorials in Mary’s name to Holy Family Catholic church in Willard are greatly appreciated.
