Merrill, Menzo (3 APR 1871 - 17 Jul 1912)

Menzo Merrill was fatally injured Monday afternoon while at work digging a well on the farm of Otto Seantrala, seven miles northwest of this village (Loyal, Clark County, Wis.). Mr. Seantrala was in the well, which was about thirty feet deep and was getting ready to put in a blast and Mr. Merrill started down to help him get it ready. Mr. Merrill attempted to make the decent by means of a rope, which had a knot tied in it and his foot in the knot. The knot came untied and Mr. Merrill was thrown to the bottom, his left foot was badly crushed, his right leg broken midway between the knee and ankle, and he was injured internally. Mr. Seantrala miraculously escaped being urt by the sudden plunge upon him. Dr. Frank Phillips was called and got the injured man in shape to be taken to the hospital at Chippewa Falls in the evening. Mr. Merrill passed away Wednesday morning at 5:30. (Withee Sentinel)

The remains were brought here (Loyal, Clark County, Wis.) last Wednesday night and the funeral services were held at the M. E. Church on Sunday afternoon at two o'clock. He was buried in the M. E. Cemetery with Modern Woodman honors.

The deceased was born April 3, 1871, on a farm two miles east of Loyal and was married to Miss Addie Randall of Neillsville on March 6, 1902. They left here two years ago last spring for Tripoli, near where they rented a farm and two years later moved to Withee, Clark County, Wis., where they resided up to the time of his death.

To the man, woman or child he always extend a cordial greeting, that lent a ray of light to brighten their pathway in the journey of life. He commanded the respect of all sects and classes of people, as the attendance at the funeral fully verified.
