Smith, Lydia J. (13 Oct 1851 - 14 OCT 1915)

Lydia Jane Welsh was born in Iron Ridge, Dodge Co., Wis., Oct. 13, 1851 and departed this life in Lakin, Kansas, Oct. 14, 1915, at the age of 64 years and one day. She was married twice, being married to J. H. Smith in 1881. They came to Caney, Kansas in 1881 and to Kearny Co. in 1896, having lived in the city of Lakin for more than twenty years. The immediate relatives who survive her are her husband, her aged mother, one daughter, Mrs. Bruce Parker of Denver, Col., five sisters and four brothers, and four grandchildren. Mrs. Smith will be greatly missed from the community in which she has lived so long. The house in which she lay when the death angel came last Thursday morning, had been her home for almost twenty-two years. Mrs. Smith possessed an unusually large circle of friends, and the news of the distressing accident, in which she was knocked down and run over by a runaway horse, by which she met her death, cast a gloom over the entire community, as she knew almost everyone in and around Lakin and many are the homes that have been cheered and helped by her tender ministries. The needs of the sick room always made a strong appeal to her, as did also the home stricken with sorrow, and many hearts are sad because of her untimely going; yet we realize that while our loss is great her gain is infinitely greater.

Mrs. J. H. Smith was the eldest daughter of the late Wm. Welsh of Loyal, Clark County, Wis., and wife. She leaves to mourn her death, besides those mentioned above, her mother, Mrs. Wm. Welsh and five sisters and four brothers, who are, Mrs. Rhoda Flaherty of Loyal, Wis.; Mrs. Carrie Tomlinson of Raleigh, N.D.; Mrs. Mary Vetter of Perkinstown, Wis., Mrs. Martha Catlin of the town of Sherman, Clark Co., Mrs. Ellen McGee of Cottage Grove, Oregon, Grant Welsh of Loyal, Wis., Douglas Welsh at Washington, John Welsh at Perkinstown, Wis., George welsh at Loyal, Wis.
