Schwantes, Donald & Evelyn (50th Anniversary- 12 June 1983)

The golden wedding anniversary of Mr. and Mrs. Donald (Evelyn) Schwantes of Neillsville was observed July 2 at Neillsville Country Club.

They had been married June 12, 1933 in the parsonage of Auburndale's Norwegian Lutheran Church by the Rev. A.M. Egge and have been making Neillsville their home all their married life.

They have three sons, Dick of Marina del Rey, California, Terry of Bloomington, Minnesota, and Jeff of Burnsville, Minnesota. There also are six grandchildren.

Schwantes, son of Mr. and Mrs. William (Frances Justman) Schwantes, was born in the Town of Unity, He received his education in Maple Grove Grade School and Unity High School, then attended Moler Barber College in Minneapolis. He was a barber in Colby and then in Neillsville.

In 1933 he purchased his own shop and operated it until retiring in early April 1969. Since then he has done seasonal work, including working for Figi's Inc., Marshfield, and as a flagman for the state. He was a volunteer fireman for 31 years. For 30 years he was secretary-teasurer for the Neillsville and area township fire departments.

Mrs. Schwantes was born in Auburndale to Mr. and Mrs. Ole (Mae Conkling) Sivertson. She was educated in Auburndale and Marshfield schools then graduated from Stevens Point Central State Teachers College. She taught primary grades in Curtiss for three years prior to her marriage.

Both are members of United Methodist Church. She has been a teacher and a Sunday School superintendent for many years.

Mrs. Schwantes has been active in Scouting, has been a den mother, was music director for Job's Daughters, was matron for the Order of the eastern Star, did substitute teaching in Neillsville and was employed for 18 years in the office of Memorial Hospital.
