Lainey Horn is the Neillsville Kiwanis Club’s Junior Kiwanian for the month of March, selected for her activity in extra-curricular clubs, sports and volunteering, among others. Submitted photo

At their March 13 meeting, the Neillsville Kiwanis Club was introduced to senior student Lainey Horn as its Junior Kiwanian for the month. She is the daughter of Daryn and Tammy Horn, and will be participating in the club’s meetings.

Activity in school extra-curricular clubs, student government, sports and volunteer efforts characterize Horn’s high school experience. She is a member of the National Honor Society, Spanish Club, Student Council, is president of Family, Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) and has served as class vice-president for the past three years.

Horn is a four-year member of the softball and volleyball teams. Volunteer efforts in the community include working at church and benefit events, as well as assisting with Neillsville Recreation Department practices and tournaments.

Following her graduation, Horn’s plans are to enroll at UW-La Crosse to major in Kinesiology, enter the physical therapy program, and pursue a career as a physical therapist.

Highlighting the efforts and achievements of outstanding senior students like Horn has been a fixture of the Neillsville Kiwanis Club’s emphasis on the community’s youth.

Simplicity breaks ground for new branch building

After announcing plans to build a new, larger branch building in Neillsville in September 2022, Simplicity Credit Union (Simplicity) broke ground on their new location March 20.

Simplicity’s new branch will be built one block west of the current location and is currently on track to open in the Fall 2023. It will feature a larger lobby, more space for the lending team and a drive-thru that will improve the flow of branch traffic and give members improved accessibility.

“We are grateful for the excellent partnerships and loyal members in Neillsville and the surrounding areas,” said Kelly Korth, Simplicity CXO. “With this new building and an expanded team, we’ll have even more opportunity to serve the community.”

Hium, Donna Mae (16 January 1927 – 27 March 2023)

Donna M. Hium, age 96, of Eau Claire, formerly of Greenwood, took God’s hand and was reunited in Ken’s arms on Monday, March 27, 2023.

Donna Mae Kind was born January 16, 1927, in the Town of Deer Creek, rural Stetsonville, the daughter of Otto and Mabel (Johnson) Kind. She was raised on the family farm and received her education in Greenwood area schools, graduating from Greenwood High School in 1944. Donna was united in marriage to Kenneth Hium on December 31, 1945, at United Evangelical Lutheran Church in Greenwood. In addition to helping Ken on the farm, she worked as a Surgical Technician at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Marshfield and Memorial Hospital in Neillsville. She finished her working career as a Home Health Aide for Clark County.

Donna was an active member of Our Savior’s Lutheran Church, Greenwood American Legion Auxiliary and the Westside Homemakers. In her spare time, she painted, crocheted, sewed and quilted. However, Donna delighted in her family, holding “Granny Camps” for her grandchildren and dressing up for Halloween to celebrate with her great-grandchildren.

She is survived by her daughters: JoAnn Hium of Eau Claire, Peggy (Wayne ) Turnquist of Eau Claire, and Darla Hium of Wauwatosa; foreign exchange daughter: Patricia Arfinengo of Arequipa, Peru; four grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; two siblings: Darlene Speich of Rockford, IL and Otto (Pat) Kind of Greenwood; one sister-in-law: Marie Nirva of Withee; many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Donna was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Kenneth; sons-in-law: Jerry Gouge’ and Tom Ament: and siblings and in-laws: Ruth (Raymond) Rasmussen, Elroy Kind, Vernon (Neva) Kind, Orlando (Alvina) Kind, Elmer Speich and Chet Nirva.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, April 1, 2023, at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Greenwood. Rev. Elizabeth Bier will officiate, and burial will follow in the Greenwood City Cemetery. Pallbearers will be her grandchildren and their partners: Holly (Pat) Hassemer, Becca (Dan) Coleman, and Ben (Sarah Franzen) Turnquist. Honorary pallbearers will be her great-grandchildren: Teddy and Sydney Hassemer, Marcus, Makayla and Clare Coleman, and Walker Turnquist. Visitation will be held at the church, on Saturday, from 9:30 a.m. until the time of service.

The family thanks the staff at Heritage Court in Eau Claire and St. Croix Hospice for their loving care.

Sluzewski, Robert M. (14 December 1931 – 20 March 2023) With Flag

Robert M. Sluzewski, age 91, of Owen, passed away Monday morning, March 20, 2023, at Clark County Rehabilitation & Living Center.

Robert was born on December 14, 1931, the son of Edward and Josephine (Ignowski) Sluzewski in Chicago, Illinois. He graduated from Owen High School in 1949 and later joined the Marines, serving on the USS Pendleton. After leaving the service in 1956, Robert returned to the home dairy farm in Owen where he farmed until his retirement. He enjoyed many hobbies including outdoor sports, bowling, stamp and baseball card collecting and watching football on television, especially the Green Bay Packers.

Robert is survived by his brother Edward (DeEtta) of Owen, and two sisters, Joan (David) Cantwell of Ixonia, and Dorothy (Thomas) Gehrke of Eau Claire, sister in law; Yvonne Sluzewski as well as many nieces and nephews. He is also survived by a special friend and caregiver, Joan Mueller.

He is preceded in death by a brother, Lennard Sluzewski , and a sister, Lucille (John) Greschner.

A graveside service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, April 3, at Riverside Cemetery. Military rites will be conducted by Owen American Legion Post #123, Owen-Withee Vets Club and Thorp VFW Post #9057.

Marquardt, Charles B. (1925 - 2 Jul 2021)

Charles B. Marquardt, 95, formerly of Loyal, passed away on July 2, 2021, at his home on Guam. Born in 1925 in Athens, to Benjamin and Agnes (Hall) Marquardt, Charles grew up and attended school in Loyal. Upon graduation, he joined the Army. Four years later, he left the Army to enlist in the newly formed U.S. Air Force.

For 30 years, he enjoyed life as a flight engineer having been to nearly every country in the world. After retiring from the Air Force, he began work at Dole Pineapple, in Hawaii. Ten years later he would again retire and move to Guam where after 40 years of marriage, he lost his beloved wife, Ameria. After Charles remarried, he once again found himself alone when his wife, Lily, passed away. Charles continued to get together with friends and pursue his interests in all things aviation, country music, swimming in the ocean, beer and teaching himself to play the harmonica.

He is survived by his beloved brother, Patrick (Muriel) Marquardt of Pine River; and many nieces and nephews, great nieces and nephews, as well as his great-great nieces and nephews. Charles was preceded in death by his parents, Benjamin and

Agnes; his brother, Edward; and his three sisters, Ruth De Simons, Caroline Colt and Elaine Kemp.

Earl A. Dayton, 92, of Neillsville, died on Wednesday, March 29, 2023, at the Marshfield Medical Center-Marshfield.

Earl Dayton was born January 11, 1931, in La Crosse, to Howard & Winnifred (Schumacker) Dayton. He Graduated High School in Melrose. He married Marlene Aldinger on July 2, 1955, in Neillsville, at the United Methodist Church. Earl & Marlene had 4 boys Rick (Rita), Jeff, Mark (Jackie), Dennis (Lisa) Dayton and 16 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren and 2 great-great grandchildren. He worked for Urbans in Neillsville for 34 years before retiring. He retired from the National Guards with 23 years in.

He is preceded in death by his parents Howard & Winnifred (Schumacker) Dayton, his brothers Darryl, Donald and sister Ruby Frost, daughter in-law Colleen, Sisters in-law Dorothy, Doris and Lila, Brothers in-law Carl Zank and Ralph Frost.

He is survived by his wife of 67 years Marlene, sons Rick (Rita), Jeff, Mark (Jackie), Dennis (Lisa) Dayton,16 grandchildren,11 great grandchildren & 2 great-great grandchildren; sisters Patty (Roger) Mallory and Donna Zank; Brother Robert; Sister-in-law Sylvia Dayton; many nieces and nephews.

No funeral is planned at this time He is to be buried in Neillsville City Cemetery.
